excuse me, i just realized that the height of the sun to touch the horizon should be 0.25° not 0.5°, since 0.5° is the angular diameter, not the radius. that correction would make the previous math even more damning for the flat earth model.

if the sun is actually 3,239 miles up, how far away would it have to be for perspective to explain it appearing to be 0.25° above the horizon?
((i.e. -- just touching the horizon at midnight -- still never setting or rising: that is still utterly impossible on a flat earth))

solve:

tan(3239/x) = 0.25°
3239/x = tan(0.25°)
x = 3239/tan(0.25°)
x = 742,319 miles

you need a much bigger frisbee, dude.
but it can never be big enough to explain a sunset or a sunrise.

Gary, Karraster or any flat earther, please explain where the meter measurement came from.

This is still a legitimate question. I really would like an answer from the flat earth view. Thank you.

"Man --- talk about 'ramble on'..."

SMH

i used those numbers because the distances from NYC to the equator and to the pole have actually been measured.
<SCREEEEEECH-like-the-needle-across-a-record> What? "to the pole" ???

"Did you just 'kind-of' forget to add the other half of the sun-cycle-circle to the equation?"

and this is all according to the "perspective" and "vanishing point" argument you keep touting, without ever understanding it, ...
You are the one who does not understand it.

My question is --- do you really, actually, want to understand it?

if the earth is flat, the sun never sets anywhere on earth.
'perspective' IS the very REASON why the sun APPEARS to "set"...

It is a visual illusion - intrinsic to how God made human eyesight to work.

At sunset, the sun is not moving 'downward'; rather, it is moving 'away'.

The 'whole' sun - "as a dot" - does not have to diminish to "a tiny dot" for it to "vanish" at the horizon.

"That's not the way it works..."

Consider a very long train that is moving forward away from you towards the horizon. Does the whole train have to reach the horizon before any part of it "disappears" at the horizon? Of course not! The engine(s) at the front of the train may "vanish" at the horizon while the back end of the train can still be seen. The whole train - as a 'unit' - does not have to reach the horizon before a part of it "disappears" beyond the horizon. Neither does the whole sun - as a 'unit' - have to reach the horizon before a part of it "disappears" beyond the horizon.

The horizon is NOT "at the edge of the Earth"; it is a "virtual limit" of our eyesight. When ANYTHING gets too far away from us - towards the horizon -- it "disappears" beyond the horizon. It is still there -- we just cannot see it -- because, it is too far away.

The horizon is NOT a 'point' - into which the sun must go. It is a 'line' - beyond which the sun must go. ( according to the "virtual limit" of our eyesight )

The horizon is NOT something that is measureable with a ruler. It is a visual 'effect'. It is an 'effect' that makes the sun - at a relatively fixed distance above the Earth - and, moving parallel to the surface of the Earth - "disappear" beyond the horizon as it moves away from us.

( of course, it is the opposite as it moves towards us -- it "disappears" at 'sunset' - it "appears" at 'sunrise' )

posthuman - you are simply not understanding how 'perspective' works in the Flat Earth model ( and, in reality ).

Again -- my question is - do you really, actually, want to understand it?

:)

no, i included that distance.

do you not know how to add numbers and see that for yourself?

is simple addition too hard for you?

serious question: because i have laid all this out for you very clearly, even using your fabricated numbers, and it still utterly damns the flat earth model.

but you're still in this post i'm quoting claiming perspective causes the sun to appear to set???

do you really not comprehend the math i just showed you?
serious question.

yes or no, do you understand the posts i made this morning or not?
is simple trigonometry over your head?

Posthuman, you can't reason with them. You keep presenting reasonable illustrations and explanations and expecting them to seriously consider what you say.

They don't care about facts and logic. They only twist it to their own ends.

Whether they believe it or not, their attitude is coming from the devil and no one can reason with the father of lies.

Sometimes Jesus just left the people He was with because He couldn't reason with them. I sense your frustration with their deception. But sometimes one can only let a fool continue on his way because he can't listen to rational instruction.

Wisdom (truth) is for those who seek it. It can't be forced on anyone (much to my continued frustration in my own life).

To know the truth, one has to want to know the truth more than want what he "knows" to be the truth.

Perhaps they are some of Obama's "cyber warriors" who get paid to sit at home and play these games on Christian and conservative web sites. (Your tax dollars at work.)

I think your time would be better spent watching the sun rise and set and thanking God for all with which you are blessed.

Did you even watch this video?

Watch the 15-second segment from offset 11:45 to offset 12:00 --- over and over and over --- and, let it sink in... ;)

Once you are willing to admit that you at least understand the concept -- perhaps we can move forward...

Until then -- just keep watching that video until something 'clicks'.

The concept involves more than "pure" line-of-sight. ( Not to even mention, the effects of the atmosphere. )

It is not that simple. And, this is the part you do not seem to understand.

The slanted line in the image below represents the "virtual limit" of our eyesight. Where it touches the ground is the [ visual ] horizon. The sun is far past it.

If you refuse to even try to understand this concept -- then, as far as I am concerned, you are just [ being ] a TROLL.

"I am growing tired of wasting my time talking to a brick wall..."

When any part of the sun has moved beyond the 'horizon' ( the "virtual limit" of our eyesight ) - we can no longer see it. As more of the sun moves beyond the 'horizon' - it appears to us to be "setting" -- and, when all of it has moved beyond the 'horizon' - it has set - it is gone from view.

That's not education, it's brainwashing.

Keep repeating a falsehood long enough and people will start to believe it (just look at this year's election rhetoric). That doesn't mean it somehow became true.

But since we have all those satellites orbiting the planet, it might just
show the earth is round after all.

Ya know...the reason why I can ring someone on my mobile phone who
lives in Australia.
Plus, all the water in the ocean would run off in to space and be floating around out there
