Well, the gunsmith fixed my Winchester Defender 1300…wear and tear, he said, but now it’s like it’s brand new.

…and no saying ’if you had done this not that and that s**^ lol.

One thing I’m wondering about…this day and age we can carry a 5.56 in a clutch, but it’s like a soft gun, so I’m thinking why did we go from 7.62/308 to a soft gun like the 5.56?

Have any of you any experience with the 7.92x57/8mm?
I've shot one a few times... a friend had one. It's like an "06... .32 cal instead of .30, but otherwise basically the same.
Ammo used to be pretty cheap, in surplus stuff, but I think most of that has dried up.

Yeah, but it lacks in stoppage power.

Yes, it does.... I just got my 3rd .308.... a Ruger American Hunter bolt action. I've only had it out once, but it shows a lot of promise, accuracy wise.
The Ruger SFAR in .308 still rocks.... that would be my go-to for any SHTF scenario involving urban warfare kind of stuff. It's as light as an AR15, but in .308..... I'm enjoying it a lot...

Good old American made Charter Arms has this video out.
I enjoyed learning more about them.

I have a lot of surplus ammo for the 7.92. Even though it is from the 50s it’s not a problem. I even have some from the 30s.

For my Sako 308 (Finnish rifle) I have some surplus ammo, but not that much.

If they truly are corrosive primed, usually Berdan style, then really you have to use some kind of water based cleaning solution. Good old hot water with a touch of Dawn in it works like a champ.
But shooters have been shooting corrosive ammo for decades without permanent damage, IF they clean up correctly afterwards. Much like shooting black powder firearms.

I hope you enjoy that thumper.... it ought to be fun....

It has a fine reputation.
I've seen a lot of different targets posted online with moa groups.
I would think it an excellent hunting cartridge for large game.

It is. I find my 308 to be more accurate, but the 7.92 works great too and is lighter to carry around.

I forgot to add that the reason why it is lighter is because of the heavier barrel weight of my 308. Normally a 308 would not be heavier than a 7.92.

My new Ruger 308 shows promise... this was my best group in my first outing wih it... The last 5 rounds in a Monarch box, 150g soft point ammo.... odd, because the headstamp on the cartridges was Winchester.... I don't know if Monarch contracted these from Winchester, or somehow they just ended up in the box.... anyway, these 5 were at a less than precise aiming point, but still grouped well at 100yds....

Lighter is always better when you don't drive to location IMHO.
A famous WV gunsmith made his living building ultra light hunting rifles.

The video has a heavier version than yours, maybe longer stock, barrel and a scope. 10#+. Otherwise perhaps stock k98.
It's an interesting video showing it's potential with handloads all the way out to 1,100 yards.
It has a 4x scope with nice glass and a T reticle. I wish these were more common in modern scopes.
The last half of his range session he goes into some interesting history I think you'll enjoy.

It has the ability with the peep sights out to 200+yards cleanly harvest whitetail if you do your part. There's no need to sporterize for hunting, but drilling and tapping for a scope makes sense to me.

I went through this list and see you already had a Kimber on there. That's a good list for comparison.

I totally agree about ergonomics and pointability.

I saw this video and I think you'll like it!
