When you gain access to someone's property without the owner knowing ... that's usually called stealing.
That's true, of course. And when applied to data and tracking collection on the internet, it's the same thing, except that they've managed to ensure that the general public is no longer “bothered” by it or has “gotten used” to it. This is certainly also because it's so abstract and doesn't directly “hurt.”

Even people who live in monasteries, someone knows their location and name. Some more elusive ones are the one who live alone in the dessert of forest and live off the land basically.
It's not about living in complete anonymity. It's about not becoming a transparent citizen for companies or authorities that know more about you than you have actually told them yourself.

What do you mean by this?
As i said, even during the Cold War, the spies did not flag people for having a daily convo about shopping. Only about the system or the dictator.
What I meant was that “the naive” probably said, just don't speak out against the government and you won't have any problems, so it's not really a problem. Without realizing that this is not the solution. Similar to today with all the tracking efforts, where the masses don't care and don't see the problem. And it's not just about advertising! If the whole issue were only about advertising, it would actually be almost “harmless,” because you can take simple steps against it. But the whole thing goes much further when you think it through to its end.

In our country, so-called “barrier-free parking garages” are currently springing up like mushrooms. Instead of a ticket, the license plate is scanned and registered. You then have 48 hours to pay the parking fee online. If you don't pay, a fine is automatically triggered. So they have the ability to access the owner's data via the license plate! These systems are all operated by the same German company, which probably offers them to parking garages throughout Europe. Of course, it's easy to create a movement profile from the collected data. Does the general public care? Of course not... And that's not even though US bashing is widespread here (because of Trump) and the sign in front of each of these parking garages states that the data could also transmitted to the US (Amazon servers).

And here we are again with the naive ones. They constantly rant about the US and Trump and how bad things are now there and how we should avoid US products and certainly not go there on vacation anymore. But they don't care that their license plates are scanned and stored in the US... (Just so there are no misunderstandings, I have nothing against the US, and certainly not because of Trump. I am bothered by the scanning system itself, and I want to use this example to show how the naive masses are inconsistent, even within “their own world.”)

I will definitely not use any of these parking garages. It is nobody's business when and how long I park where. Conventional parking tickets (parking passes) have been anonymous.

And why does it bother you then if they know where you parked?

I remember a science fiction short story where they were trying to solve a murder case and they had a machine that could take quantum imagery snapshots of the past. (Resolution got fuzzy when you tried to take a picture of more than a week or so ago.) That concept might bother some people. But what were they doing four days ago that they don't want people taking a picture of?

I remember somebody complaining that "they can register my car at the exit where I got on the freeway, register it when I get off, calculate the time and know I was speeding." GOOD! You're endangering yourself and everybody around you, just to shave a few minutes off your travel time. I hope they send you a HUGE ticket, you inconsiderate, dangerous jerk.

Me, I don't try to beat everybody else going down the highway. So they can log my car going on and off any exit and do any calculations they want with it. I don't give a fart in a whirlwind.

So... Coll, ole buddy... Where you been parking lately that you don't want anybody to know about, eh?:whistle::whistle::giggle:

Principle.

It's none of their business and creepy that they are wanting to know what people are doing
Market research has been conducted for many, many, many years. The tools may change but the goal is always the same.

So now they have the tools for more granular market research. Big whoop. Let em record that I parked there. Maybe it'll be a spot people visit some day when I get famous.

Which is being used more and more by governments to take away rights of citizens and will get much worse.

You are welcome to not value God given rights and freedoms and be willing to forfeit your rights and freedoms since you believe they are of no value.

Most people see value in their God given rights and freedoms

They haven't taken away any of my rights.

No I don't have any interest in the long list of rights you think they might at some point in the future take away. Anybody can holler about, "this will give them the power to do such and so!" That's why so many people do holler about it. It's so easy.

If the big bad government wants to start taking people's rights away, they don't have to wait for a technological innovation. They could accomplish this goal with horse and buggy days equipment.

Go ahead and holler about it if you have to. I refuse to live in fear.

That is precisely the kind of malicious distortion that is unfortunately all too common today. I said that I don't want to park in parking garages where you have to register. With your question, you are twisting my statement to suggest that I park in questionable places and therefore do not want to be observed because I have something to hide. This insidious type of distortion is simply abhorrent and repulsive.

But it's doggone funny too! :D

"Sometimes you want to park
Where nobody knows who you are
Or the model of your car
You want to park
Way off in the dark
(And then have to walk really far)
You want to park
Where no one knows who you are"
- to the tune of the "Cheers" theme

And I don't have the energy for insidious distortion. There's nothing in it for me so I can't be bothered. I just like having fun with your ego that assumes anybody cares where you park.

Okay. I'll be serious for a minute. (Yes I can do serious, for short stretches.)

I was not saying you are doing anything licentious or scurrilous. I was using humor, sarcasm and the assumption that you are NOT doing anything shady to make a point.

Let's assume somebody does care enough to record on a hard drive that you were parking at that parking lot. Why would you care? If you don't have anything to hide, and I assume you don't, why would you care if anybody or any computer knows?

My phone might have reported to some mainframe that yesterday I went to w*rk, then went to the auction, then came home. I can't imagine anybody cares enough to store that on a hard drive, but let's assume somebody does. A computer knows where I went yesterday.

Give me one reason why I should care that it knows this.

"THEY'RE TRACKING US!!!" Who cares? I have known for decades that they could track us. I haven't cared for one second. I have no reason to care. Let them record for all of time that I went to the store and got blueberries for dad. I have no reason to care if they know.

And yet you somehow cannot help but put forth the effort to force it into existence.

There's nothing in it for me so I can't be bothered.
Could you possibly be any more selfish?!?!?!

I just like having fun with your ego that assumes anybody cares where you park.
You are the one with the ego.

Just because you don't care does not automatically mean that no one else can possibly have a valid reason to care or be concerned.

This is why you come across as being callously tactless.

I agree with this statement and this is why i use a network-level firewall to block ads in moderation. Because if i block 100% i won't be able to use about 90% of the internet.

And to give you a general response about your later paragraph, i would say that i see things that the internet has to offer in terms of convenience. The original intent of the internet by Tim Berners Lee who invented it, was to share information rapidly. Because back then we used fax machines and wired telephones. But since then it has evolved and turned into a minefield of bad areas which include filth, misinformation to name a couple.
With this being said (to relate to your car garage story), back in 1997 i used to get an electricity bill, which i then took to an actual story, where i paid the bill (in cash). This simple task used to take me hours because i would have to drive then and back home.
Later i got a bank account, so then i spent less time because i write the check and then mail the check.
Then later on (with the internet) i now do paperless automated payments.
This means that technology has saved me time. Because what is the most precious commodity that you won't get back? Time!

I think that a lot of misunderstandings can come from the Internet itself due to the white noise coming from the 'village idiot' component, but we will take things as they come one day at a time.

And yet you somehow cannot help but put forth the effort to force it into existence.

Y'all came into a nice Linux thread and started spouting conspiracy crap. You call ME callously tactless?

Godwin's Law, modified: The longer a thread runs, the closer the probability of somebody ranting about conspiracy theories gets to 1. In other words if ANY thread, on ANY topic, runs long enough, eventually somebody is going to try to make it about the government conspiring against us.

That's what we all need to invest in a nice tin foil hat so the government can't listen to what we are thinkin! funny.gif

Those have been around for decades. You think "they" haven't found a way around it by now?

I know the REAL way to keep them from reading my thoughts, but I'm not telling you because I don't want them to find out and find a way around it.

they would read my mind if they could?

If they could why wouldn't they?

That would be a way to keep track of those that are not in agreement with globalism that is leading to the coming one world government led by the one world leader (anti-christ)

Any decent hoodlum knows that they must keep the non compliant ones in check as they are threat to the hoodlums rule.

If you don't have anything to hide...
When this topic about privacy started here, I was just waiting for this sentence to come up sooner or later. I already mentioned what I have to say about this in my last posts here, in connection with the “naive.”

I just like having fun with your ego
Making fun of someone just because they have a different opinion speaks volumes about a person's character.
