I find it somewhat naive to believe that all this data collection from big tech companies (and others...) is harmless because it is “only” for the purpose of personalized advertising and no one is interested in the individual because we are all not important enough. All this data collection is so opaque, and we simply don't know what is being done with it in detail. (And what does the Bible say about things that happen in secret?) The fact is that by collecting and analyzing all this metadata (which is the real interest behind it), massive conclusions can be drawn. And have you already forgotten the revelations that Edward Snowden uncovered?
And even if it were true that data collection is harmless for “ordinary everyday people” because we are "not important enough", the fact that it can be used against you as soon as you become “important enough” is scandalous.
And the terms and conditions of most common services allow all of this. If you think about what you agree to in Microsoft's terms and conditions, you are actually allowing them full control over every device and its content. Perhaps they are not yet making full use of their “right” when it comes to local devices, but technically and “legally” they could.
And even though I don't program and compile a Linux kernel myself, I trust the global open source community more than the power-hungry big tech companies.
Thank you for joining this discussion. I like your perspective since you also live in Switzerland if I’m not mistaken.
In EU the laws are more strict against corporations compared to USA in topics like privacy and monopoly.
But this is not because of some technicality. It’s more because of an ideology where they don’t like the big guy - in theory - because in practice you have to pay baureocrats to get anything done as a small guy.
Also I’m glad that you brought up Edward Snowden who I also consider a hero.
This is why I asked what’s your definition of spying though.
Because even during communism, which I have lived in, the secret police didn’t flag everyone for daily convo.
They flagged people for saying something against the system OR against the dictator.
So ultimately, if you’re paranoid about the internet or the world, why don’t you leave the world and become a monk?
Data collection is ultimately a salesman coming at your house trying to sell you solar panels, windows, doors, lawn service and anything else.
But if no one knows where you live, or if you live in a dessert, forest or monastery, then they can’t come, can they?
What do you think about this?
