  • I finally bought my own copy of Lightning - the book that started it all. I only ever checked it out from the library, but it's been YEARS. It's funny how MUCH writing affects us... I've had it for 3 weeks, but it's still sitting on my coffee table, unopened. Two of my favorite characters don't make it, and I'm bracing myself to mourn them all over again.

    bedtime now tho.
There is a moment in one of the Jane Hawk books where she's threatening a bad guy, but you know, Mr. Koontz's heroes all have very strong moral compasses, and she doesn't go through with it. I was actually quite disappointed. I wanted to see a bad guy get his due!!

even worse when you can see him coming back later to finish the job
It's always interesting to me to see how different people like different things. You liked the seriousness of The Taking and that's exactly why I didn't like it, lol. So glad you're enjoying his work! I have to admit though, I don't enjoy some of his later works as much as the earlier ones. But I adore Mr. Koontz as a person and will always read his work because of that.
I love that you've taken the dive right into his work and will be eager to hear what you think about this one. 💪🏼

almost done, chapter 51, and still have no idea whats going on.

I am hesitant to read it before bed, as I do have terrible nightmares and sleep paralysis at times, but im not sure.... might be worth it.
it is incredible, though, how he keeps you witth no clue, but still compelling to keep reading. I like how real it is, unlike much fiction, where it glosses over many details, whic, of course, is neccesary to keep

    it from being too 'bad'
I love how serious it is, and ironically, its written how we have been thinking, similar style, since a goo d while before I even picked it up. hmm...

I have to confess, I really did not enjoy The Taking. None of his usual humor or wit. 🥺 I read that at the time, his publisher wanted a "serious" book. 😳 Funny that someone of his success still has to cater to the overlords.

I just realized that that was a quote from one of his newsleters or afterwords or something. maybe you didn't even notice lol 'still has to cater to the overlords."
I sent a friend I've known half my life pics of Mr. Dean's inscriptions to me. She said, "I never knew your name was spelled like that!!" Bingo!! That's exactly why it meant so much that he would take the time to notice, and the trouble to write it out. How have things been going in your corner of the world? This is just old Aunt Seoul checking up on you! :)

    much better.
    looking forward!
I had no idea that The Book of Counted Sorrows had such a limited print... Wow. You have officially surpassed me as a Mr. Dean Super Fan!!! 😎

sadly, 500 dollas is above my budget. but eventually.... maybe.
I love that Mr. Dean was "meta" WAY before being meta was even considered a thing! 😁Hope you are doing well and I'm so glad you're enjoying his books! 👍
But I started reading his books back when no one knew that The Book of Counted Sorrows didn't technically exist! Truth be told, my favorite of his books are probably still the ones I first read back in the 90's. I think it was in Mr. Murder that he had a quote from a book by Laura Shane... Laura is the main character of his book, Lightning, which is still my favorite.
He also said that over the years, tons of librarians had written him out of frustration in trying to find this "elusive" book. He finally decided to put all the verses into a real book. I've also seen some listings of The Book of Counted Joys... I may have to pick both of them up one of these days.

given that only 1250 copies and 26 lettered copies exist....
Alas, you have indeed gone from Grasshopper to Master! "Back in my day..." You probably read about the colorful history of the Book of Counted Sorrows... When I started reading his books, people would see it quoted and would try to go find the actual book... But no one could find it. Years later, Mr. Dean finally explained that it was a creation his own imagination when he needed a few lines of poetry for a book.
Noticed the number change... Hope you had an awesome birthday 🎉🎂!

I couldn't resist following suit on the avatar idea, lol. He's not the exact dragon I was matched with, but he sure is cute!😁Thank goodness for nephews! They keep me up to date on the trends! 😎
Life is life-ing so I might not be here as much (or I might be here all the time as a distraction, lol,) so if it ever takes a bit to answer, it's just because other things are keeping me busy. How have you been? 😊🙏🌹

really good. life is still looking up... for the next 3 months...
Looks like he wrote it under his own name -- rats. At first, editors said he couldn't mix different genres in one book, so he used pen names for his different styles. I was hoping, if it was under a pen name, maybe he had other books under that name that were similar. But no dice. I'm really happy you're liking his work!
I know I read Cold Fire years ago but can't remember it... He does have some books with characters that are obsessive but I think they're mostly side characters. As much as I love his work, he does repeat a lot of ideas with different settings and different people. I think Cold Fire is one he wrote under a pen name when he was starting out. Hang on a minute...
How is my CC nephew doing... Who are the characters in your avatar? (What show/manga, etc. are they from?) Gotta keep your old Aunt Seoul up to speed! 😁
