In my meager opinion, I believe that the below story of king Abimelech is one of the more important stories in the Bible. It shows how much control the Lord can have over our thoughts and actions, though we don't realize it. In Red below, look at how the king gives himself credit for not "touching" Abraham's wife in a sexual way. In purple, note how God corrects the king by stating that it was He, the Lord, who did not allow Abimelech to "touch" Sarah in a sexual way.
Genesis 20:3-6 NLT - "But that night God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, "You are a dead man, for that woman you have taken is already married!" But Abimelech had not slept with her yet, so he said, "Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? Didn't Abraham tell me, 'She is my sister'? And she herself said, 'Yes, he is my brother.' I acted in complete innocence! My hands are clean." In the dream God responded, "Yes, I know you are innocent. That's why I kept you from sinning against me, and why I did not let you touch her."
Question: How do "you" know that God is not directing your thoughts and actions as He did with king Abimelech? How do you know, for sure, that it is you who makes your decisions? As the Bible tells us, we are either led by the Devil or by the Spirit . . . and there is no middle ground.
John 8:42-44 ESV - 42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
