I know that some have claimed that Trump has or will damage the economy, and is presumably worse for the economy than Joe Biden. But I recently learned that the number of people receiving SNAP (basically food stamps) increased by 40% under Joe Biden. How can we have this incredible increase in the poor over such a short period of time without everyone, and I mean everyone including Democrats, admitting that Joe Biden was horrible for the economy. Whatever your feeling I would think that having the poor increase by 40% in a four year administration would be seen as horrible by everyone. If we can't all agree on that then it is pointless even having a discussion about this.

I am no fan of Biden, However, it appears the growth was during Trump. Specifically during covid from 2019-2020. The different sources I have looked at say the same thing this one is from Pew Research.

"In March 2020, as the nation headed into COVID-19 lockdowns, Congress authorized extra SNAP benefits for recipients and suspended work and training requirements for the duration of the declared public health emergency. The number of recipients immediately jumped from 37.2 million in March 2020 to 40.9 million one month later, and topped out in September 2020 at just over 43 million recipients, or 13% of the resident population."

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/07/19/what-the-data-says-about-food-stamps-in-the-u-s/

The chart from the second source shows that the highest it reached under Biden is 42.2 million and the current number is 41.7 million.

Do you have a source for the 40% under Biden or is this info someone you assumed you could trust told you?

Here is the link for the second source and charts each year with 2013 being the highest number on record.

I got that number from the woman who is in charge of administering SNAP in the Trump administration, she was being interviewed by Fox news. So she is an authoritative source, but a bureaucrat, not a politician.

I saw other data that said the amount of money spent on SNAP jumped from $6 billion to $11 billion (I think that was a month) under Biden. So two different sources providing roughly similar information.

According to Google the US spent $60 billion on SNAP in 2019 and $100 billion in 2024. That is a 67% increase from 2019.

@ResidentAlien says Trump's policies are incredibly ignorant so apparently he claims to be very knowledgeable. Perhaps he can help how he would think that increasing the number of poor by 67% during Biden's administration is more knowledgeable than what Trump is doing?

His tariff policies show his incredible ignorance. He's doubling down on the idea that it's a tax on other countries when in fact it's a tax on the US. Everyone seems to know this but him.
You claim to be very knowledgeable. Perhaps he can help how he would think that increasing the number of poor by 67% during Biden's administration is more knowledgeable than what Trump is doing?

"we're paying more for literally everything but at least we're owning the libs"
During Joe Biden's four years the amount paid for SNAP increased from $60 billion to $100 billion. SNAP is a very good indication of who is poor, so explain to everyone how during Joe Biden's administration the number of poor increases by 67% and yet your complaints are about how Trump is running the economy?

I found the interview it was with Donna Rollins she is the Secretary of Agriculture. Watched it about five times jut to make sure I fully digested everything she was saying.

In your post I disagree with you on these conclusions, " But I recently learned that the number of people receiving SNAP (basically food stamps) increased by 40%", "Whatever your feeling I would think that having the poor increase by 40% in a four year administration would be seen as horrible by everyone."

She never made that connection nor said that. The nearly 40% explosion she is talking about is in line with the info you are conveying now. The cost or as she put it a 40% increase in snap benefits. During the Biden admin he increased snap payments by 21%. So if you were getting $100 you now received $121.

She mentions in the interview that they have asked all states for their snap data and only 29 have replied so far. She mentions the abuse and used what I am sure is a outlier for an example. She said that they had found one person who was receiving snap benefits in 6 different states.

While that is more than likely an outlier the problem is they are finding folks are receiving additional snap benefits above what they are legally entitled to. To what extent we have no idea as only 29 states have submitted the data so far.

If you have a individual receiving snap benefits like he is 6 people that is going to skew the numbers if you have other people receiving additional snap benefits that is going to skew the numbers. While we do know that snap benefits did increase 21%, due to them being raised.

We also know that there is abuse going on as well. While there is a good possibility that poverty may have increased for Americans until we know what percentage of the payments are illegals and what percentage is abuse. There is no way we can rationally conclude there was an 40% increase of poor in our country since we still have unknowns to do the proper math.

Here is what I found online for snap.

The maximum monthly SNAP benefit varies by household size and is adjusted annually based on the USDA's Thrifty Food Plan to account for inflation. As of October 1, 2025, the updated maximum allotments for the 48 contiguous states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico are as follows:
  • 1 person: $298
  • 2 people: $546
  • 3 people: $785
  • 4 people: $994
  • 5 people: $1,183
  • 6 people: $1,421
  • 7 people: $1,571
  • 8 people: $1,789
  • Each additional person: +$218
So I have to wonder is that some of the abuse people putting down that they have more in the household than they in fact do? I have no clue. However, again I don't believe we can conclude that we had a 40% increase of poor until we have all the data to see what may be the reason behind the increase in benefits then go from there.

The increase started with the Cares Act then continued until it expired in 2023 so yes there was an increase. https://www.ers.usda.gov/amber-wave...deral-food-and-nutrition-assistance-landscape

I asked google how much the US paid in SNAP in 2019, when Biden was not president and 2024 the last year of Biden's presidency. The total amount spent increased by 67%. I was not looking at how much money the benefits increased by on a per capita basis. It is perfectly reasonable to claim that part of the increase was due to inflation.

But the basic premise that the US went from spending $60 billion to $100 billion a year on SNAP during Biden's presidency doesn't change. Whether you want to say that the number of people who were poor increased that much or that inflation was that much making every single person in the country poorer regardless of whether or not they receive welfare is fine.

Either way it is a horrendous record as President and certainly not sustainable to the US. In addition it has to bring into question the credibility of anyone who considers Trump's presidency has been worse for the US economy than Biden's. That premise seems almost impossible to be true.

Americans have been conditioned thru policies that come from socialism to be dependent upon government.
(Both repubs and dems are to blame)

Most among us believe government is their mommy and daddy.
I'm glad I'm a Christian because the Lord God almighty is my source of supply! banana_dancing.gif

Just pointing out the reason and cause for them(Democrats and Republicans in 116th congress) voting to increase SNAP and unemployment insurance benefits(Cares Act) and the increase in those qualifying for both UI and SNAP. https://www.upjohn.org/research-highlights/food-stamps-and-unemployment-compensation-covid-19-crisis

This nation needs to get run away spending under control

We cannot keep paying for everything like we have been.

If this doesn't get under control the dollar will crash and it'll make the great depression look like a Sunday school picnic

All the grifters who think the government is their mommy and daddy will burn this nation to the ground if the freebies stop.

Then we will have civil war and most of these grifters will have to be whacked in order to get rid of lawlessness.

Grifters? Yep, that is an explanation that could explain the 67% increase. Why couldn't Resident Alien or Dude come up with that?

I agree Biden was foolish. I also find it disingenuous the arguments against Trump. There is a pretense that they are based on factual evidence when they are actually based on feelings. There is more than enough data to show how food prices rose with additional money being allocated to purchase. Meanwhile there was no addition to supply.

Folks were paid more to sit at home and not work with their additional unemployment. Than to work 40 hours. We increased the money supply and did not increase production. This has led to some stubborn inflation that still persists. We have a deficit problem, folks are losing their jobs, a government shutdown, the Fed has announced that they are no longer going to be doing QT.

This on top of already existing problems. It's not going to be easy and will not be fixed overnight and maybe not even in one admin. However, some want to lay this at Trump's feet like it all began when he won the election. That is not rational and one can only do so because they are being led by their feelings rather than facts and being rational.

I agree with all this, however, it didn't start with Biden either. The corruption is so deep and wide it will be a major surgery to save the patient.

I agree with all this, however, it didn't start with Biden either.

No it didn't.

Socialism started getting traction back in the 60s with all those dope smokin hippies.

And since that time both repub and dems have used the promise of free stuff to get votes

The dems did it a lot more, but the repubs have had their hand in it too.

At least the repubs didn't make abortion and sex perversion major planks in their party platform.

Democrats cannot be in right standing with the Lord and support the abominations of abortion and sex perversion

I agree with all this, however, it didn't start with Biden either. The corruption is so deep and wide it will be a major surgery to save the patient.

I agree it all began when we started a central bank. As then our money is borrowed into existence. We tried to tie such a system to gold which did not work. Just as it did not for central banks in Europe. With a fiat system of borrowing into existence it can only be backed by the faith and good will of said government.

What some don't know is that faith and good will as a backing means the ability to tax your citizens and a willingness to do so. We went from tariffs funding our nation to now taxing income directly upon numerous other taxes. We had to we passed the income tax in early 1913 and later that year with that now in place finally created a central bank.

Meanwhile this country had existed from tariffs as our founders believed it was immoral to tax ones income. Government borrows money into existence creating debt. Then government pays for that by simple interest with a balloon payment. The balloon payment never comes because they just roll it over.

Then they inflate the money because that means for them that they pay less for the debt. Meanwhile commercial banks charge us compound interest so that we have to pay for that inflation. So that a house you buy today you pay two to three times more for to compensate for the current and future inflation.

So yeah has been going before our time and just makes one say come quickly Lord Jesus.
