There's no doubt the passage was added around that time and the Protestants retained it even though it's a 'Catholic' addition.

Many of the Reformers were diehard trinitarians and today people who have accepted this three in one have complicated it.

There is nowhere in the scriptures that speak of men as spirits, you won't find one, but I can show you many that speak of us as souls. It is the essence of who we are. It is the soul that is created in the image of God. It is the soul in which our personhood is found. The essence of the soul contains our consciousness (of self and others), mentality (thinking in all it's forms), emotions, volition, conscience. We are to love the Lord with all our heart (treasure Him above all else), soul (all of our being), mind (in all our thinking), and strength (use our bodies for the Lord's work). Nowhere does it say love Him with your spirit because our spirits are born of God and do not need to be trained as our spirit automatically aligns with the Spirit. Our spirit will not accept anything that is not of God. It is how our souls become darkened without a human spirit because we have no "truth filter". God's word must come (by way of the Spirit) through our spirit into the soul and lived out through the body.

Mark 12:30
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

Their soul did not become dead, their spirit returned to God who gave it. Ecc.12:7 When we are dead in our sins Eph.2:1, we are not physically dead, nor mentally/emotionally dead but spiritually dead. This is why we must be born of the Spirit in order to enter/see/understand the Kingdom of God and the things of God.

How we are put together was never the issue. You called men spirits when they are clearly called souls throughout scripture.

Men are not spirits, they are souls. What makes us uniquely human is in our soul. No-one is arguing men are made up of spirit, soul and body if they are regenerated but we are born unregenerated, body and soul only which is why we must be born from above. Jn.3:6 Spirit (God) gives birth to (human) spirit.
