I hope this thread becomes a discussion about the Trinity. These are just some of my observations followed by questions.
1. The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit are God.
Question: Is this the core belief of the Trinity? Something else? Assuming it is not appropriate to call them "Gods" is there one title that actually fits the Father, the Son, and the Spirit?
2. Jesus did not consider equality with God something to be grasped (Philippians 2:6).
Question: How best can we describe the Trinity without using the word "equal"?
That's all for now. Thank you.
Since the title of this thread is "the Trinity", we should start off with the history of the Trinity.
The Jews believe in a one person God. Duet 6: 4 Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord defines Israel's national creed. Mark 12: 29-30 states that loving the Lord thy God is the first commandment. Nowhere in the Bible is a triune God mentioned or hinted at. The trio of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are mentioned in the New Testament, but never hinted at or declared that they were the same being. Ask Jews if they believe in a Trinity. For sure, Jesus's mind was different from the Father's when he prayed to the Father that not his will be done, but the Father's. John 6:38, John 4: 34, Matt 26: 39 In Mark 12: 35-37 The Lord speaking is the Father, and the second Lord, "my Lord", is His Son, Christ. That is two distinct beings that have existed even during the time of David. The RCC (Roman Catholic Church) adopted the Trinity concept in 325 AD at the Council of Nicaea, included it in their Nicene Creed, and confirmed it at the Council of Constantinople. Emperor Constantine, who was a sun worshiper, ordered that Christian bishops had to teach that the Father and Son were the same being. The Holy Spirit was added as the third person of the Trinity at the Council of Constantinople. During the reign of Nicene (Trinitarian) Emperor Theodocius in 379 AD, in his edict of Thessalonica, he declared that the Trinity had to be taught throughout the Roman empire, and anyone teaching anything different would be punished by the Roman government. This punishment would include confiscation of property and death. This is the time when a so-called Christian organization started killing other Christians who disagreed with their doctrine of the Trinity. The first Christians to face judicial execution by other Christians for his beliefs after the edict of Thessalonica was Priscillian, Bishop of Avila in 385 AD. The effect of this edict is still felt today. Every doctrine established by the RCC is not in the Bible and is categorized as " tradition of men". Check out the non-RCC history of the RCC, and you will find total corruption and death of Christians. It is amazing to me that anything that they have come up with is still believed.
Still making everything about yourself. Thanks! That does seem to be a good resource. Y'all can find my presentation of it on the "How do angels jibe with the HS?" thread.

I disagree with much of Catholicsm. I won't even call it a church. It's a man made organisation. However, as I said, there is some truth. They state that Jesus is Saviour and Lord. The current pope has stated that Mary is not a mediator between God and man. Fine. How about dealing with the rest of the vast number of empty human traditions.Gideon 300, what do you disagree with? Check your history. Check the history of the RCC's catechism that was written throughout the history of the RCC by different popes. It includes such things as indulgences, worship of Mary, marriage of priests, priests forgiving sins by simply reciting the Our Father and Hail Mary, Purgatory, mortal and venial sins, praying to saints, statues, etc. Read Foxe's Book of Martyrs and about The Spanish Inquisition. The richest organization in the world is the Roman Catholic Church.

It's like we have four oceans but one body of water.Note! Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord?
It is not what it says in the Hebrew.
I know. I used to sing the Shema in synagogue on Saturday morning services.
Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One! (not - one lord!)
The word "One" is echad.
Echad means a unity of One!
Here... read this page, please. https://www.bible.ca/trinity/trinity-oneness-unity-yachid-vs-echad.htm
grace and peace!
Just got home with Foxe's Book Of Martyrs. Stumbled on it at Half Price Books while looking for Hunt and Spurgeon.Gideon 300, what do you disagree with? Check your history. Was reading last night about how the pope became infallible in Dave Hunt's book A Woman Rides The Beast. Threats, bribes and arrests were how they got it done in Vatican 1.This is another one that catholics will deny and say that Mary's role as co-redeemer and mediatrix is not a formally defined dogma of the RCC. Really? It's right here in the catechism. 969 This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation...Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix. What's the definition of a mediatrix? A woman who is a mediator. And here is some more evidence that the catholics are of the opinion that Mary is the mediatrix of all graces, a title Roman catholics give to the blessed virgin Mary as the mother of God. It includes the understanding that she mediates the divine grace. THIs was given to us by pope Leo XIII in 1894. Catholic dictionary: mediatrix is a title of the blessed virgin as a mediator of grace. Fr. Dwight Longenecker in his article in the magazine Catholic Answers titled Mary, Mother of Salvation; How to explain the Co-Redemptrix to Evangelicals 12/01/ 2007. How about don't explain it to us because it's a false teaching. The catholic magazine Catholic Planet describes Mary as co-redemptrix , mediatrix, and advocatrix. Catholicism.org May 31. 2000 titled Our Lady, Mediatrix of all graces says at he bottom of the page that God will not listen to any prayer that is not offered to him through the intercession of Mary. This leads us back to 1 Tim 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Rom 8 : 34 Who is he that condemneth? Shall Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Jesus " maketh intercession for us" by praying to the Father on our behalf. Are catholics trying to disobey the Bible on purpose? They are trying to put Mary on a pedestal to make her equal to Jesus. Mary being the mediatrix is a man-made tradition of the RCC that is found nowhere in the Bible.
The government (singular noun), they (plural pronoun) pass laws. It's interesting that the Bible tells us that the simplest things about God will confuse the wise. The term Elohim has definitely confused the English speaking peoples.
Ask God because He told it person to person to Moses and instructed how Moses was to use it.The government (singular noun), they (plural pronoun) pass laws.
Why does the singular noun have a plural pronoun?
Your answer has no connection to my question.Ask God because He told it person to person to Moses and instructed how Moses was to use it.
The fact that people even discuss this issue as if they know better than those from 4,800 years ago seems like a joke to me. They clearly understand the Torah (5 Books of the Law) better than the English any day of the week.
Because the government is a title but those who operate the government are many would be the English understanding.Your answer has no connection to my question.
Why can't you even answer one simple question?
PaulThomson said:
The government, they pass laws.
The government (singular noun), they (plural pronoun) pass laws.
Why does the singular noun (government) have a plural pronoun (they) ?
Because the government is a title but those who operate the government are many would be the English understanding.
But Paul said God uses the government to keep control by having people live within a system of laws.
So really many people are doing the work for one God who designed the system to begin with.
