There are many much better options for that same platform. The military almost adopted a .270 caliber... what was it, the 6.8 or some such? It was supposed to be way superior to the 5.56, ballistically.

There are also other very popular options, such as the .300 Blackout, which gives the same power range as the 7.62X39, with a smaller case head to fit the AR bolt face.

I have a 6.5 Grendel, which uses the same case head size as the 7.62X39, which works well in an AR.

I think the military is too heavily invested in the 5.56, though, so they are making it somewhat better by going with heavier bullets, which improves penetration and terminal ballistics.

This new 270 is supposed to be better against body armor than the 308, at range...which apparently the troops have been having problems with, using the 5.56.... you likely know a lot more about that than I do...

Then there is the 7mm x '08, still I believe the greater performance is from the very high pressure they expect from it.:)(y):unsure::coffee:
 
The 5.7 pistol round in Europe is not allowed in the U.S. due to it's ability to penetrate armor, perhaps the civilian "version" of this new round will be all brass, reloadable, and lower pressure?:unsure::coffee:

Here's my old Estwing. It's had a rather storied past. Our son left it out in the backyard, when he was a teenager and brain dead.... I was mowing the back yard, and almost ran over it. It had been out there for over a week, and was pretty rusted. Had to use a pedestal grinder with a wire wheel to knock all the rust off it. It still works, although I bought a Vaughn wood handle framing hammer for any actual nail driving I might need to do. 8d and smaller, I use a 160z.... it started out with a knurled face, but it's just about smooth, now.

Back to the original tools this thread was about...

I'm getting to know my recently acquired Smith Mod 60 .357.... it's a 3" barrel with adjustable sights. The guy I bought it from had put some wood grips on it, but also had the original Hogues. I put the Hogues back on it, and sort of liked the feel, even though it felt a little thin.. after shooting it the first time, I put the wood grips back on... there just wasn't enough control with those slim rubber grips.
I shot it again a few days ago, and it feels much better. I'm still working up loads for it, and the SP101, but it's promising. The top target is with some XTreme plated hollow base wadcutters at just under 800 fps.
The lower target it is with some 110g JHP bullets loaded in 38sp cases.
These were at 15 yards, resting my wrists on the shooting bench for stability.

I heard the military is adopting the 6.8x51 or a 277 furry in civilian terms. Its some ridiculous bi metal case that allows it to be loaded to 80psi operating pressure.

That being said I dont think its to defeat body armor. In any well equipped military the plates they have now days stop 300 win mags at point blank range. I'd think it is the superior ballistics they are going for.

3" barrel, shortened for carry, or factory, unusual to me if factory.
3.2 gr of w231-always been a faithful load.

Ruger makes good firearms.
I've owned quite a few of them over the years.... presently I think I have 8 or 9 various ones.... they also have top notch customer service. Just an all around great company, IMHO, of course.

I had a .45 auto also I gave one of the boys. Rugers ive had shot good right out of the box.
