What did it mean to the Corinthians at the time?

I think it means what it says: that the last enemy that will be destroyed is death.

As you know they did not have all the letters like we do to cross reference.
Audience relevance is always paramount.

Nothing that was written later changes the fact that death is still an enemy, and that it will be destroyed in the future.

Having said this I am still working on it within a non-futurist view.

It's my guess that death needs to be abolished so that folks can remain
immortal permanently instead of tentatively. Adam was created with
immortality but lost it due to the forbidden fruit incident. Well; we sure don't
want a repeat performance of that all over again because it would make the
Lord's promises iffy; for example:

• John 5:24 . . I assure you: those who listen to my message, and believe in
God who sent me, have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their
sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

• John 10:27-28 . . My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they
follow me; and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish.

• John 11:25-26 . . I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me
shall live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall
never die.

If I remember right, Paul wrote 1 Corinthians in the 50s. Are you suggesting that when Paul wrote it the destruction of death was still future, but now the destruction of death is past?

The punctuation of that verse would make a difference as to how this is understood.

Greek: καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ἀμήν λέγω σοι σήμερον, μετ' ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ
Literal Interlinear: And Jesus said to him, Truly to you I say today, with me you will be in Paradise.

Since Christ would only be in Paradise after His resurrection (three days later), at which time He would take all the OT saints with Him to the New Jerusalem, it would have been incorrect to say that He would be in Paradise on the day that He died. But because this verse was not punctuated properly, we get the wrong impression.

SOUL SLEEP IS FALSE DOCTRINE, SO DON'T BOTHER WITH THAT.

The Hebrew word for "breath" in Gen 2:7 is neshamah rather than nephesh.

Nephesh = soul, but can mean breath in Hebrew--Because it was the breath of life that made one a living soul. Not has a soul.
