Base verb is: τηρέω (tēréō) Meaning: to keep to guard to observe to hold fast John 14:15 τηρήσετε = future active indicative, 2nd person plural → “you (plural) will keep” John 14:23 τηρήσει = future active indicative, 3rd person singular → “he will keep”

Same word used in verse 15 as verse 23. Only difference is one is second person plural and one is third person singular. Both uses are future active indicative. You also have to look at v21. The “must do” is love Him. Following His commandments is a result of the “must do”.

I agree that God is sovereign and His commands are absolute but Jesus’ point is that obedience is meant to flow from love and connection not just duty. Jesus is also pointing out that plants don’t work, their life and growth come from God.

1 John 2:6 isn’t about legalistic duty. John is warning against hypocrisy. If we truly live in Christ, our lives will naturally reflect His example. Obedience flows from our connection to Him and love for the Father, not from just checking off rules.

I think “obligated” misses the heart of it. Jesus didn’t obey out of duty, but out of love and connection with the Father. Following Him isn’t about legalistic effort, it’s about staying rooted in Him so His life naturally flows through us.

Does it please you when someone does something for you only so they get something in return? Feels hollow to me when that happens.

So there’s not a list of rules that we must follow? Or a set number of how many rules we can break before “else” happens?

If we must follow His commandments or else, which commandments must we follow and how many can we not obey before the “else” happens?

I’m not offended at all but I am a little confused now. You said we must follow His commandments but you lied. now you’re saying He’s not going to do anything to you. So your logic is we don’t have to follow the one about not lying but we must follow the rest?
