What is your opinion on stores giving discounts to those who download and use their apps and gas stations that make you pay first or use a debt or credit card at the pump.
I pay cash for everything, don't have a credit card and never use a debit card and do not like the idea of giving all the personal information to get these apps and it angers me when I have to pay more because I pay cash and refuse to give them information that is none of their business.
As for gas, I always fill up so I do not know how much the bill will be until I am through.
I drive an extra 12 miles to the only station in my area that still allows you to fill up first.

We have been paying up front for gas for quite some time... implemented to enhance safety
and reduce fuel theft, after a gas station attendant was killed during a gas-and-dash incident.

Do what you feel is best brother.
I see the whole digital system as easier to carry cash but like i said, do what works for you.
As things are now, it's getting harder and harder to do business in cash though.

I am always ready to use cash. I finally used the $100.00 bill that carry in my wallet for at least twenty years yesterday to pay for lunch.

I prefer plastic because it's safer than carrying cash, and I get 2% back every time I use my card.

It's a shame to waste our time waiting in line twice and required to overpay to fill up. There's a few excuses the companies use to get us trained into compliance with their demands.
They got humans trained good enough to get us to fingerprint children to go to Disney world.
When the mark is someday issued, there won't be any more than complaints from Christians because we haven't so much as talk to the politicians about the Real ID Act.

How did I get from A to Z so quickly?
I've fought the political battle for our God given rights and the principles ancestors were willing to die for; many of them did.

I disagree it is safer.
Those getting cash back while I pay the full price also angers me.
Have you ever experienced identity theft? I have about 30 years ago.
Cost me over $30,000.
Have not used credit since then.
The day my retirement checks are deposited, I take the money out and put it in a safety deposit box at the bank and take it out as needed.

  • They already have my information if they want it, so what
  • If someone steals my cash, it's gone. If someone steals my credit card, I protest the charges; I've lost nothing.
  • I always fill up too and idc what the bill is, I have to buy it, I don't have a choice, so I just do.
  • How much does it cost you to drive an extra 24 miles (there and back again)? Probably roughly one gallon of gas, right? So 3-8$ you are spending on satisfying your personal offense, is that worth it? To me, it's not. I get gas twice a week.
  • I see it as overpaying for my own lack of frugality if I don't take advantage of the discounts offered, and also doing them a disservice - no one running a business gives discounts for certain buying behavior because they are going to do worse by doing so. They do it because it will overall make their business better. So I am refusing to do the good that is in my power to do, if I from some weird pet peeve, decline.

Just my opinion

do not like the idea of giving all the personal information to get these apps

just about every single gas station you walk into has you on camera from every angle the whole time, and AI face recognition can pinpoint exactly who you are, and then relatively simple internet searches of your name and geographic area can find out exactly how old you are, where you live, your income, your education, etc.

i don't go around spilling my identity everywhere, but i also don't fill my life with worry, trying to remain anonymous and secret in this world - i'm not ashamed of who i am.

the effort and stress is not worth the illusion of privacy. anyone with enough savvy in this forum who cared enough to put in the work could show up at my front door tomorrow.

i'd rather concentrate on living a life i'm not ashamed of, than hiding the one i'm living.

Seems I am the old weird one here.
I just like the old ways and have a hard time adjusting to all these new ways.:(

One thing I have learned when I started using cash only, I spend a lot less money and save a lot more.
The day may come when that is not possible, and when it does, I will change, but under protest.

I use cash still on car washes or when a friend of a friend helps me with a project at home like changing a door or something and i guess my rule is that if it is an exact number without change, i can still use cash.
$15 for car wash. I use cash. I don't need change basically. I apply this rule anywhere prices are without change.
The change bothers me basically because i have no room anymore in my wallet where to put change.

By change i mean metal coins.

Using credit card is much safe nowadays. They now have a square chip which helps to prevent the vendor from storing your credit card information. Just make sure you don't lose the card; if you do you can easily block use/get a new number. Even with fraudulent charges now, you are not responsible as the credit card company is better able to identify they are fraudulent.

My wife has a BIG jar she puts all the change in.
Last time she rolled it, we took it to the bank and changed it for $800 cash and she went shopping!

in Europe cash was still preferred in most places. I had no problem with that, and kept it on hand. And I always have cash if I need it - - I do prefer the convenience of plastic and I just don't really mind the tradeoff, or think of it as something worth worrying much about

For one thing with gas prices always changing I don't want to be in the situation where I need to fill up but then realize I don't have enough money with me lol, or need to go find an atm first ((which is also plastic!))

Now, some people attach all their banking to their phone, and just carry it around like it is a wallet - a wallet that has a short battery life!

I'm not a fan of that - - so I'm in a sense stuck in my own 'old ways' too!!

Ofen wonder what they do when / if the cell phone dies or is lost?

the credit card company is better able to identify they are fraudulent.

Yes mine calls me often if I travel or make a big purchase, to make sure it's legitimate. I appreciate that, and it's actually caught a couple of times someone copied the card when I used it at a store.
This can't happen with cash or with bitcoin; there are tradeoffs to anonymity / transparency
