Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him.
I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man
on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’"
Yes, the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus at the time of His baptism was given as a sign
to John of He Who would baptize with fire and the Spirit... John, whom Jesus called the
greatest of the prophets because he was sent to herald the coming of the long-awaited
Messiah. I do not see many saying how it is that Jesus fulfilled all righteousness by
having John water baptize Him. It was necessary because under the OT law, priests
were required to undergo baptism before taking up their priestly duties.
Unrelated: what is your favourite colour?
“what is your favourite colour?
Besides magenta you mean !?
“
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and
were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.”
Mark 1:1, 4-5 KJV
“
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed
baptize you with water; ( water for remission ) but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose:
he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:”( spirit )
Luke 3:16 KJV
This now after johns witness that he sees the spirit descend ect ( what your talking about ) and after johns disciples began
following Jesus ,as John was telling them to do witnessing that he is the messiah they’d been waiting for .
“After these things came
Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. And
John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim,
because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. For John was not yet cast into prison.”
John 3:22-24 KJV
“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee,
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is
born of the flesh is flesh;
and that which is
born of the Spirit is spirit.
John 3:5-6 KJV
“When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that
Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (though
Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)”
John 4:1-2 KJV
But this isn’t talking about “spiritual baptism “ or fire yet it hasn’t happened
“
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this
spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”
John 7:38-39 KJV
this is baptisms purpose
after Jesus died for sins and rose again for believers of the gospel Peter was just preaching to them which comes to this point now
“This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.”
Acts 2:32-33 KJV
now the spirit has been poured out and anyone can receive it through hearing the gospel and believing but it never replaces baptism for remission of sins in Jesus name that’s always baptisms purpose
“Then Peter said unto them,
Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, ( the same thing john preached )
and
ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.( what John said would happen later by Jesus )
For
the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
Acts 2:38-39 KJV
Except a man be
born of ( 1 )water (for remission of sins in jesus name who died for our sins )
2 and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
My only position is not that Jesus doesn’t give the Holy Ghost to believers but that baptism is bf r repentance and remission of sins in his name this is the church doctrine in the Bible and clearly it involves water before the cross and also after the church received the Holy Ghost Jew and gentile
“And
he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that
through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. While Peter yet spake
these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that
on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them
speak with tongues, and magnify God.
Then answered
Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And
he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
Acts 10:42-48 KJV
Peter isnt wrong to baptize these people in Jesus name for remission of sins as he did before it’s what he was commanded to do and a great promise and gift to mankind
remission of sins to all who repent and
believe in him who died to
remit thier sins
“Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and
preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they
came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said,
If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said,
I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and
they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.”
Acts 8:35-39
Notice they still kept baptizing in the Bible Mean ? They didn’t just tell everyone “ now we dont need baptism for remission of sins we received the spirit “ Th one who received the spirit had all been baptized and were sent to baptize others of all nations
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Matthew 28:18-20 KJV
they clearly were
baptizing in water for remission of sins in his name well after the church was established is my point .
Tbat doesn’t
replace receiving the spirit but receving the spirit doesn’t
remove baptism for remission of sins either
water and spirit
One is what a believer does the other is what God does
