In the first place, it was not our individual sins that cause us to be separated from God. It was Adam's sin that made God reject all of us automatically.
As Romans 5:12-19 clearly explained, God provided the only way where "He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus." (Romans 3:26). That is accomplish by Jesus's act of obedience towards God by going all the way to the cross.
When we accept Jesus and believe in his death burial and resurrection, God credited the same righteousness of Jesus to all of us who do so. So eternal life is not automatically granted, but only to those who receive his finished work (Romans 5:17).
