Looks like everyone in this thread is speaking at cross-purposes. It is true that "the flesh" (the sin nature) is
within the soul (and Jesus called it "the heart", from which come all evil thoughts and desires).
But it is the spirit which communicates with God, since the Holy Spirit dwells within the revived ("quickened) and renewed spirit.
While the soul and spirit are closely linked, they are indeed separate. And that is why the natural man does not understand the things of the Spirit, whereas the spiritual man does.
So what the OP is saying is that the flesh must be mortified or put to death. However, the soul is the person himself and remains alive while the flesh is crucified by the power of the Spirit.
