It's hard to beat a good 30-06.... will do just about anything....
Dang. I don't know what to do!
30-06 sounds so cool when I say it in my head.
So does "Lapua"
Of course, I'm rather free with everyone else's moneyBut I say..."GO FOR IT!!"
What do you think of .300 WM, brother?
I like it. I've never owned one, but reading the ballistics, it shows to be a true do anything caliber for North America, without the heavier recoil of the "above 30" crowd.
I think, IIRC, that it will give you 200-ish fps more per bullet weight than the '06... which is substantial. As a sort of cheap comparison, if the '06 is a 350yd deer rifle, the 300 would be a 450yd deer rifle. I think it would be much better for elk.
Any of the bigger calibers, however, come with a price... more expensive ammo, etc... Rifles generally are the same price range for the '06, 300, and 338 Win Mag... I think the rifles for the Lapua might be a little more pricey.
As I've gotten older, I've become more of a minimalist, caliber-wise. My "big" gun right now is a 1909 Argentine mauser that I turned into a .35 Whelen... which is simply an '06 necked up to 35 caliber. If I ever get to go for elk, I will simply have to limit my shots to under 300yds or so. Which is ok, because I've never had the desire to shoot an animal in the next county..
If I was going to buy a new rifle strictly for elk, I would very likely get either the 300 WinMag, or one of the newer "short" 300's. I MIGHT be tempted to go with a 375 Ruger, though.... I like the looks of that one, ballistically, although it might not have quite as flat a trajectory as the 300's...

I have a first cousin who had twin girls at the rip old age of 14. Then one of those girls was late to the game and became a momma at 18. Imagine a 32 y/o granny?Wow dude! You started early.
You guys are tempting me to buy a gun. I got the missus a little .380 pistol a while back. That way she feels safer at home, seeing I works nights.
I'd like a .45 Mag but wifey would want a pistol she could use, too. That's probably too big for her. Between a .357 & .38, which is better?

You misunderstood me Sister. I bought my wifey a .380 already. Next one that comes through the door belongs to poppa. However, she'd probably want to shoot it, too. If I buy a .45, it'd probably be too big for her. I want a 9" barrell...go big or go home. So it's probably a snubnose .38 or a .357.Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it!
I'm always a supported of people giving guns as presents.I'm sure you can only imagine who inspired and arranged for dad to buy mom a 12 gauge as an anniversary present.

Whatever gun I buy is for removing varmints...those pesky things that come around at night wanting to steal and sell for drug $.Neither of those, IMHO. A 45ACP has a nice amount of knockdown power, and provided the shooter has a good tripod stance and isn't limp-wristing the handgun, it has barely more recoil than a 9mm. Get yourself a nice 1911 clone (and nice doesn't have to be expensive - mine was $400 and it has performed better than any handgun I own).
Ill take a AK17 and a rocketlauncher, thanks![]()
How big a pistol are we talking? Concealed carry, or drawer-based hand cannon.
