I only separate belief from multiple acts of obedience/works which "follow" belief because belief in essence is not works.
Correct, belief is parallel with obedience. Then the formula is belief/obedience/works which James calls faith + works.

I don't separate belief from the obedient act of choosing to believe in the Son in John 3:36.
I read this before. I'm surprised belief/obedient act of choosing is not causing you to allege "works salvation" against yourself.

Sounds complicated.
The word under discussion meaning "disobey" is complicated?

Allow me to simplify. Faith is believing and multiple acts of obedience which "follow" and are produced out of faith are works and we are saved through faith, not works. (Ephesians 2:8,9) Consistent acts of obedience are a manifestation of faith just as consistent acts of disobedience are a manifestation of unbelief.
Thank you, but I think the verse is simple because I understand the parallelism between belief and obedience thanks to Jesus, John, Paul, Peter, and the writer of Hebrews: NAS John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

Confused question!!!

FAITH in order to be BIBLICAL FAITH (since "faith" in normal use has no meaning) there must be TWO ATTRIBUTES:
SUBSTANCE, and EVIDENCE. "Belief (intellectual assent) has NEITHER - it has no "substance", and it's not an "Evidence" of anything.

Biblical FAITH, on the other hand has substance - as demonstrated by Abraham: Abdaham and Issac went up the mountain where Abraham was going to KILL ISSAC as a blood offering. Hopwever he told his people, that he and issac would go up to saxcrifice AND THEY WOULD RETURN - which would obviously be impossible. BUT Abraham had God's WORD that Ussac would be the progenitor of a great nation, which would be impossible if he were killed that day. Obviously, then to Abraham, God had something in mind that Abraham wasn't aware of - yet. He had the SUBSTANCE of God's Promise, and that was his EVIDENCE that Issac wouls live on - IN SPITE of being killed on the alter that he helped his father build. ISSAC, who wasn't a little boy at the time could have REFUSED to be sacrificed, and overpowered his father when he wound up on the alter, ready to die, so he also possessed the SUBSTANCE of God's promise that he would father a mighty nation.

Bottom line: "Works / Obedience" don't "Create FAITH", but are only the RESULT of Biblical FAITH. which is the meaning behind James 2:18.
Faith is obedience. When one has faith they are obeying.

I have been trying to add my obedience to the reconciliation that Jesus performed for us.

Romans 5:10
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more,
having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

2 Corinthians 5:18
Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us
the ministry of reconciliation
.

2 Corinthians 5:20
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us;
we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Ephesians 2:16
And might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.

Colossians 1:20
And through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross;
through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

Colossians 1:22
Yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him
holy and blameless and beyond reproach
.

How does my obedience fit into that reconciliation?

1 Corinthians 2:2
For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
Beautiful verses that I agree with. Just like I agree with all of these 😁

Jn. 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

ASV Jn. 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

NASB Jn. 3:36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Heb. 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,

Acts 6:7 Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Rom. 1:5 Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ

Rom. 2:8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath,

Rom. 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?17 But God be thanked that thoughyou were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.

Rom. 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “LORD, who has believed our report?”

Rom. 16:25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began26 but now made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith

2 Thess. 1:8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Gal. 3:1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?

Gal. 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

1 Peter 1:22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,

1 Peter 4:17 For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?

Belief and obedience are parallel. The fun part is how obedience also connects to works.
Yeah like the term faith relates to faithfulness when we learn about faith we learn about men who listened to Gods words to them not from a Mount of fire but through relationships where they trusted him and followed after him
and the things he was telling them would bless them like Abraham God told him to leave his homeland and relatives and go to an unnamed place and he packed up and went not knowing where he was even going yet . He wasn’t a man of the law of Moses but a man of faith who listened to Gods word and followed after him

Absolutely correct.

Faithfulness is a big word. At the end of all of this haggling about faith and obedience and works, it really just all boils down to being faithful. Much of the OC discussion is about covenantal loyalty - faithfulness - also tied to love.

This is one of the times I agree with the KJV:

KJV Galatians 3:9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
Abraham was in great company:

NKJ Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
NKJ 1 Corinthians 1:9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

For the believer who follows the Lord Jesus Christ.......Obedience connects to the Lord Jesus Christ and His GRACE given.

For the believer who follows his own obedience........Works is the way. And it fails every time.

The key to faith is to hear what god actually said then we can believe it and apply it because he will always be faithful to his promises

Nope. Choosing to believe the gospel is not works salvation. Through believing we are trusting in Another's work - Christ's finished work of redemption. (Romans 3:24-28)

The word disobey in of itself is not complicated. I referring to the long winded explanation from your post.

I understand to "not obey the Son" means to disobey the Son by refusing to believe in the Son.

Yes, and this belief/trust/choice should be till death do we depart.

Hebrews 11 teaches the connection between faith and obedience. You cannot have one without the other.

Agreed on the surface. It seems our difference is that I openly parallel faith with obedience and show why from Scripture, and you say you don't yet your words seem to say you do.

Having a saving faith would be obeying God since without faith it is impossible to please Him (Heb. 11:6).

Faith & Obedience are Linked
Lanny Smith
11/17/19 - Article

FAITH AND OBEDIENCE ARE LINKED!

One of the most misunderstood concepts in the Bible is “faith.” Many who claim to be Christians insist that “faith” and “obedience” are completely separate concepts. As long as that misunderstanding continues, we will never be in agreement with our denominational friends. Nevertheless, the Scriptures are very clear that “faith” and “obedience” are linked concepts! Would you explore this with me?

Let us begin with the definition of “faith.” Basically, to have faith is “to trust in; to depend or rely on.” In terms of saving faith, we speak of “trusting” in Christ (Jn.3:16). Now if you “trust in, depend on, or rely on” someone, you will do what they ask! If you fail to do what they ask, it means that you do NOT “trust in, depend on, or rely” on them! This can be illustrated with your personal physician. When he tells you what is wrong, and prescribes a treatment, you will accept his diagnosis, and take the treatment! It’s just that simple!

This brings us to Jesus as the great Physician. “And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, ‘How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?’ When Jesus heard it, He said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance’” (Mk.2:16-18). If “Doc Jesus” gives us a prescription for our sin-sickness, we would be well-advised to take it! (cf. Jn.12:48)

In commenting on this understanding of “faith,” W.E. Vine says this: “The main elements in "faith" in its relation to the invisible God, as distinct from "faith" in man, are especially brought out in the use of this noun and the corresponding verb, pisteuo; they are (1) a firm conviction, producing a full acknowledgement of God's revelation or truth, e. g., 2 Thess. 2:11-12; (2) a personal surrender to Him, John 1:12; (3) a conduct inspired by such surrender, 2 Cor 5:7. Prominence is given to one or other of these elements according to the context.” Notice that third element very carefully! Biblical, saving “faith” requires a certain “conduct” from us! This concept of “faith” can be seen in a number of Scriptures. Let’s examine a few of them.

In Romans 10:16, we read this: “But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, ‘LORD, who has believed our report?’” If you will take note, the word “obeyed” is equated with the word “believed” in that passage! This just confirms in a direct way what I have said, namely, that “faith” and “obedience” are linked! Now let’s consider another example.

In Hebrews 3:16-19, we read this: “For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? So, we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.” This passage confirms what we have already observed, but from the negative perspective. Those who “rebelled,” “sinned,” and “did not obey” did so “because of unbelief.” Now, let’s consider one more example.

In John 3:36, we read this: "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him" (cf. ASV, NASV, ESV). Once again, the one who “believes in the Son” is clearly the one who will “obey the Son.” In fact, the words “faith” and “obedience” are so linked that they can be used interchangeably (cp. KJV, NKJV).

It should be clear that those who try to “disconnect” faith from obedience are grievously mistaken! Those concepts are linked in Scripture. To “believe in Jesus” is to “obey Jesus” (Mk.16:16; Ac.8:12; 18:8; Ga.3:26-27; Col.2:12). Now, the only question which remains is: “Do you TRULY believe in Jesus?”

God’s Definition of “Believing” Involves “Obeying”

By: David Sproule

“He who believes in Me has everlasting life” (John 6:47). “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Believing on Jesus is a central and critical doctrine of the Bible—essential to a relationship with Him and all spiritual blessings that He provides! Believing is such a pivotal and thrilling part of knowing Christ that we sing about it often. “‘Almost persuaded’ now to believe.” “Come to Christ, on Him believe.” “Sinner, O won’t you believe it?” “I know whom I have believed.” “When at the Cross I believed.” “They who believe on His name shall rejoice.” “Freely bestowed on all who believe.”

But, what does it mean to believe in Jesus? More specifically, when we read in the Bible about “believing” and when we sing about “believing,” is it merely talking about a heartfelt, mental assent to the truthfulness of who Jesus is and what He did for us on the cross? Or, is it something else? Maybe even something more?

The Bible teaches, plainly and repeatedly, that truly “believing” as God expects and requires (and as that word is often used in the New Testament) is equivalent to obeying. Someone might read that statement and immediately object, “Believing is not the same as obeying. There are many people, in the Bible and today, who believe but do not obey.” That statement is true. But, we are talking about those who truly and acceptably believe, as God uses that word.

Scripture often uses the words “believe” and “obey” interchangeably, emphasizing God’s view of faith as an obedient faith. Highlight John 3:36 in your Bible. “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (NASB). Note carefully that “eternal life” is for one who “believes” but “not” for one who does not “obey.” The words, in God’s dictionary, mean the same thing. In your margin next to John 3:36, write Hebrews 3:18-19. “And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.” Again, the words are synonymous.

In the margin next to John 3:16, you might write these two references above, and add Hebrews 5:9. John 3:16 says, “Whoever believes…should…have everlasting life.” Hebrews 5:9 teaches, “He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.” Eternal salvation is for those who have an obedient faith. Believing, as God defines it, includes obeying.

When we read or sing about “believing,” let’s make sure that we understand that as God understands it.
