Hello everyone. I am a 16 year old on a student exchange to Peru, and as I now live in a Catholic dominated country, I have a lot of new questions. I am a born-again Christian as of almost 1 year ago, so I do not want any Catholics to answer my question. This is for true Christians only.

I. What is the thing that will glorify God the most when I’m in a Catholic religion class?
a) Should I sit through the Catholic sermon quietly?
b) Should I openly oppose the teacher in class, pointing out verses which contradict what she is teaching?
c) Should I talk to the teacher after class?
d) Should I talk to my peers around me about what is incorrect with her teaching?

II. Soon, I will have the option to attend religion class or not. Should I continue attending religion class?

III. Do you have any good ideas on how to spread the biblical truth of salvation through faith alone (Rom. 3:28, 4:3, 4:5, 5:1, 11:6, Gal. 2:16, Eph. 2:8-9) instead of salvation through faith and works in my community?

Thanks!

B) looks like it could go either way

You oppose the teacher, teacher can't defend herself, the kids witness this victory and begin to doubt their attempts to be do-gooders to get into the kingdom. The other way this can go down is, you oppose the teacher, the teacher can't defend herself, and the kids come to her defense. Thus they close their minds.

I honestly don't know which options I would take. I suspect I would take D regardless of whether I did the others or not.

I know I'm not supposed to answer this, but I'm going to throw my two cents in.

I would go for option A. Because if you go with B one of two things will happen:

1. You might temporarily stump the teacher, but the teacher will soon bring in a priest (likely a Jesuit) for the sole purpose of refuting you. Which is likely bad for you because Jesuits spend 3 years specifically studying how to refute protestant claims, and spend even longer studying Scripture and Catholic teaching. So in the end you'll end up being counter-productive to your purpose. Now this may not sound like a likely occurrence to you, but I've seen it happen in Catholic schools in the US. Because for some reason some fundamentalist like to put their kids in Catholic schools to try and witness to Catholics, which seems silly because then they're also paying the Church they're trying to oppose.

2. You might not stump the teacher and she may end up stumping you instead, thus being counter-productive to your purpose again.

II. If you don't like religion class simply stop attending once you can.

III. No I don't as that would be counter-productive to my purpose. :)

Also if it is a private Catholic school or even a public one you may be disciplined for disrupting religion class, since Holy Religion is obviously not up for debate. At worse you may be expelled and promptly have to go back to Canada.

------> You should listen, take good notes, and strive for a good grade. Answer honestly on essay questions and when called upon but do not become argumentative. Feel free to explain that you are simply sharing your own understanding when callled upon and respect theirs if challenged for having your beliefs. Discuss don't argue. Allow the teacher to have the last word even if you disagree with it. It's OK to thank people for their opinions. This is an excellent time to gain a good understanding of Catholic theology. Not many Protestants get the opportunity in that fashion. Find the nicest (not the most popular) and make some new friends.

II. Soon, I will have the option to attend religion class or not. Should I continue attending religion class?

--> Sure. Follow the instructions above. Listen, learn, and share your understanding when appropriate in a non-argumentative manner.

III. Do you have any good ideas on how to spread the biblical truth of salvation through faith alone (Rom. 3:28, 4:3, 4:5, 5:1, 11:6, Gal. 2:16, Eph. 2:8-9) instead of salvation through faith and works in my community?

--> If you walk it, they will listen. If you don't, they will not. Walk your walk. Recognize that in heaven, there will be no division between Catholics and Protestants and present will be people who came from each.

Well I also went through the same thing as you, including some extra stuff.
Remember that you go to that school firstly to get good grades as already stated.
Yeah a lot of wrong stuff will be taught, but get them and use them only in order for you to pass. Contradicting the teacher will only be disrespect, and may lead you to various consequences, plus it will not change anyones heart or thoughts.
God bless you bro

Sit quietly through the class is best. I've tried opposing my teachers before, so trust me when i tell you that *YOU WILL NEVER RIGHT*..lol.. The other students will just begin to dislike u, like they did to me.. And then u'll look like the bad egg. But while sitting quietly, u could also talk to some few students about the wrong Doctrines :)

Stop caring about the perspective of the teacher. Honestly, never go to university if you can't handle one high school religion class.

He's only 16... and still a relatively new Christian. He's trying to do his best to figure out to do whats right. I'd say offer advice instead of putting him down for being unsure of what to do. Maybe give him some credit for trying. Instead of trying to point out how weak you think he is. If you know so much about it yourself why not help instead?
