You stated the night time of the calendar day was over by the time of the burial. Back then and in Israel today the calendar day starts at sunset. Was not sure when your calendar day started, sunset or midnight. Using midnight the night time from midnight to sunrise plus sunset to midnight, two pieces.

He rose on Saturday near sunset. Thus the tomb was empty before Sunday using the sunset to sunset of the method of naming the day.

Mary and Mary came at the END of the sabbath day. The sabbath day is ending just before the sun is about to rise on the first day of the week. That means the sabbath day started with the sunrise of that calendar day and ended with the sunrise of the next calendar day which was the first day of the week.

As Jonah was in the belly of the big fish for 3 days and 3 nights so the Son of Man would be in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights. What time of day was he put in the tomb? The Bible states the crucifixion was just before a Sabbath and they had to hurry to beat sunset to get him buried. Therefore he rose close to sunset on Saturday. 3 days and 3 nights!!!

Try again. I suggest you start at verse 1. It starts out with the women going to the tomb which they found empty except for an angel telling them Jesus was already risen. The verse you start with has the following note in the NIV.

[The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have verses 9–20.]

Also the verse you are quoting is ambiguous and can be read a couple of ways. I looked at several translations they all have the same problem.

In understanding any issue in the Bible ALL verses on that issue have to be read in context with the surrounding verses as well as all of the other sections of scripture on that issue.

What did Jesus say was the only proof he was the Messiah?
The sign of Jonah!! As Jonah was in the belly of the big fish so the Son of Man would be in the tomb 3 days and 3 nights. No more and no less!!
What time of day was he buried?
Late afternoon!!
Therefore what time of day is exactly 3 days and 3 nights later. Sunday morning does not work!!

But was it a common figure of speech? In other words, was it common to forecast or say that a daytime or a night time would be or was involved with an event when no part of a daytime or no part of a night time could occur?

It was not “common” at all. Because up until that moment, no one had ever been in the heart of the earth three days/three nights

He rose prior to Sunday morning according to the verse. At that point look to other sections of scripture to understand the timing. What do the scriptures say in all relevant, scrptures?
1. 3 days and 3 nights was the sign of being the Messiah.
2. Hurry to bury him before sunset since a high day Sabbath started at sunset.
3. Tomb empty Sunday morning.

With the above facts then the following sequence is what has to have happened.

1. He rose just before sunset (3 days and 3 nights).
2. The day would be Saturday just before sunset.
3. Counting backwards he was buried Wednesday afternoon preparation day for the high day Sabbath.
4. In tomb Thursday through Saturday rising that afternoon.

I totally ignore anyone who starts their argument out with "the earliest manuscripts". There's nothing ambiguous about that verse and it can only be read one way.
