Got the scope mounted on the AR10.... I see a trip to the range happening this weekend.... 
I have a Savage 110, .223 cal, heavy fluted barrel with laminated stock. I added a variable 48X scope, a bipod and a bench follower to make it single shot. Out of the box it will consistently hit a dime at 200 yards. Great gun.
Since many AR-15's can shoot .223, aren't they technically 22 caliber rifles?
Yes.... that is exactly what they are. Technically about .001 or .002 larger in diameter than the .22 rimfire, but still a 22. Just like the 22 Hornet, 220 Swift, 22-250, the 5.7 FN, and a host of others....

Yea, I saw a video where they used the same AR with .556 ammo and .223 winchester. The winchester ammo made it go off like a small cannon.
Yes.... they are legal in Texas. Lots of folks use AR's for hog hunting as well. Of course, as many hogs as there are in Texas, I don't think they'd mind if you used sling shots and air rifles to shoot them. They are a nuisance of the first order.
The trend lately is to use the improved cartridges to shoot heavier bullets.. in the 75-80gr range. That would drastically improve the performance of the .22's on deer sized game. The ballistic co-efficient of a heavy bullet like that would ensure very good penetration.

Actually the 5.56 NATO mm runs higher pressures than the .223 Winchester. You can fire .223 in a weapon chambered for 5.56 but it is inadvisable to go the other way around. Your memory just flip flopped the rounds.
Oh I thought it was the other way. Well then I don't know what they were shooting because don't most AR's shoot 5.56? That's the NATO round.
Most AR's are chambered for the 5.56 NATO round, and will safely shoot .223 ammo as well. The two are almost identical. I think the 5.56 is loaded slightly hotter than .223 stuff, but dimensionally they are for all intents and purposes, identical.
Ok, I see what the problem is now.... the video I saw was comparing .22LR to .223 lol.
I'm pretty sure it's like the original AR's.... bleeds off a small amount of propulsion gases, which blows the bolt back out of "locked" and cycles the action. To my knowledge, it's not adjustable at all.
Yeah, the difference from 5.56 to .223 is pretty minimal when compared to the difference between .223 and .22lr.
