Yeah, after about 15-20 shots you really don't want to shoot it anymore. For about a month...
But if you only shoot it once or twice a year to take big game you don't even notice it.
Every deer that I have shot with the 300 win mag has gone down in a hurry. Most of the deer my son has shot with his .243 have run for about 50-60yds then give up.
Something to think about if you are deciding on a good hunting rifle.

Did you see the youtube video where ppl were shooting a gun and it was knocking them down? Some took a step or two back, but some were on their keysters.
I've seen a few of them where they are in a booth or something and the rifle all but knocks them out.
Stevens makes a polk stalk 12 ga(I guess they're still a company?) that would knock you from your senses. I was told they gave a fellow I know one who would shoot ANYTHING. A week later he gave it back.
Some were sitting and got knocked off their seat. Some had the earmuffs come off. Some had the googles removed. It was a funny sight to behold. What gun was that?!?!?
My opinion? The 38 special. Depending on the gun, of course. The 357 is arguably the BEST self defense cartridge available, if you use the 125gr HP loading.... BUT... the muzzle blast and flash is borderline horrific. Recoil in most handguns is enough to make a second shot pretty slow (if you actually aim it

Ammo for the 38 is a little cheaper, as well. If you bought a 357, of course you could shoot 38 specials out of it.... exclusively, if you wished.... and you would always have the option of using the 357 if you so desired.
You can usually find 38 special revolvers a little cheaper than the comparable revolver in 357 magnum, but if that is not an issue, then I would recommend a 4" stainless revolver in 357 magnum, with the intention of shooting 38 specials in it most of the time.
I almost got a stevens instead of a savage. But they are harder to get even though they are less expensive...
I would say getting a Glock 9mm is the superior Presbyterian choice, but my pastor and I never agree about guns.

If I do buy a gun, it will be a revolver. I am not that much of a fan of semi-automatic pistols. But then again, I have had very little experience with them, too.My opinion? The 38 special.
