Where I live there seems to be a lot of snakes, rattlesnakes even. I think that has something to do with the lack of mice around here. :) There was once a 5' long king snake in the backyard. They are docile and pretty harmless but it was definitely a sight to see! We also have tarantulas and coyotes. Sometimes you can hear them howling at night and its creepy but cool too. Oh and we have owls too! I actually saw one in broad daylight once and it was huge. I think they only come out at night though.

i had to use a shovel to chop off the head of a snake that was making the kids nervous once.

I've been here in the north so long, I've got my Yankee accent down pat.
Unless there's a stressor...dealing with the mechanic and the car insurance ppl after our son had an accident caused me to drawl a bit. :)

Two of my sisters and my mom live in the Charlotte area...but almost no one there talks like southerners...
cuz they ain't! hehe

That awkward moment following a haiku session when I remember all too late that Logs are not intended to get Hang Time between my hand and the all metal wood-stove when my kids are sleeping <GONG!> and the sound signals one awkward moment giving way to the one that naturally follows next.

that's lovely, btw. :)

and I think your children have both things going for them.
but mostly the former (knowing they are loved and cared for),
which produces the latter (innocence of evil). ♥

Haha we don't see them much but in the summer they warn us over the news not to keep our garage doors open because they like to find a shaded place to stay cool, and this is not the outback lol this is just outside of Los Angeles! :D

We have our share of snakes, especially rattlers. We've got tarantulas, scorpions, black widows, brown recluse spiders (aka fiddle-backs), fire ants, army ants, termites, centipedes, millipedes, horse flies, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, bees, Africanized (aka Killer) Bees, and other exciting invertebrates. We've got wolves, foxes, and coyotes (I've even had to shoo these out of my yard when needing to get the kids out to the car, and had them hop the fence to terrorize my terrier back before she had a big sister). We've also got mountain lions and bobcats. Someone down in the city reported being attacked by a raccoon, but they should be embarrassed about that! There's opossums and skunks, and others...
And a population with enough sense that they don't drown when they look up at the sky the first time it rains.
Around these parts they don't mess with Public Service Announcements like that. They call it natural selection.
We do, however, have idiots that Chase the tornadoes.
And I call that Also natural selection.
The locals here may be the Okies that were too dumb to leave during the Dust Bowl to pick produce in CA, but apparently they're also the ones tough enough to eat something before it eats them. Maybe the locals here are the Okies that were smart enough to come back after the dust bowl and LA got to keep the rest of them. ;) :):D

All the smart Okies didn't go to CA. They came to TX, sent the dumb ones to CA, and kept the nearly smart ones in OK.
 
I'm just glad we don't have scorpions. I'm not scared of spiders or tarantulas but I don't ever want to see a scorpion! o_o

I warned a friend who was visiting our family in San Antonio once to be sure and check his shoes before putting them on and his sheets before sleeping for scorpions. He laughed and thought I was messing with him until he stepped out on the back deck that night and saw a dead scorpion trapped in the light fixture.

My stepdad fell asleep in a hammock in our yard once and was stung on the chest by a small scorpion. He was very ill.

That awkward moment when you put the note pad up to your ear instead of the phone.

The awkward moment when a guy sits at the table next to you in a fairly empty Starbucks and keeps looking down at his computer then looking your way (like does he have some kind of tick?), and you wonder if he's waiting for someone and keeps looking towards the door, or starring at your computer screen making you paranoid that he might be gathering info about you. So you stare back to give him the hint to grab some social skills.
