The rock on which we stand
Romans 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
The New Jerusalem has 12 gates and the understanding of that is that there are many different experiences of entering into the New Jerusalem. Jesus is the only way, the only road that you can take, but you can come to salvation from many different places. There are children who are saved very young, others rejected Jesus their whole life before repenting on their death bed. Some are saved from street gangs, others are saved from people who had failed without committing felonies. Some are saved on death row, others are saved with their whole life in front of them. What is common to all is that we all come to see that we need Jesus. All of the apostles were Jews so we can see how many of them got saved. But Revelation also says that a third of all Jews remaining alive during the tribulation will be saved when Antichrist is trying to wipe them out and Jesus returns in the clouds to rescue them. Many if not most of us need to be on the edge of the cliff before we will turn to the Lord. So then pray for people to get saved with that understanding.
2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
This is not the best approach to present the gospel to someone, telling them they don't have knowledge. So this chapter is not his message to the Jews. Instead Paul is using the Jews as an example for us, the church. When we get saved we all will have a zeal for God, but at the same time it is usually if not always not according to knowledge.
3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
This is a very common temptation for the church. We need to be aware of this. We must be fully informed of God's righteousness. This is the foundation that we stand on. If you try to build the church on any other foundation it will not stand. Once Saved Always Saved is right when they emphasize that righteousness is by the blood of Jesus alone. We don't stand on our righteousness we stand on the blood of Jesus. We must have a thorough understanding and revelation of that before we can even start to build. My brother tells me that most of the work of painting is not painting. Meaning the prep work is what takes most of the time. The prep work has been done for us by Jesus Christ and all the Old Testament saints right up to and including John the baptist.
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Think of the law as the prep work and Jesus Christ completed the prep work that had to be done before anyone could be a New Creation and walk in the resurrection life and build on the foundation that Jesus laid.
