Yes, it was hard times in the South in the American Civil War, coffee made with chicory was another adaptation and still is found in the south. Surprising to me, Nebraska is a large producer of chicory.

I and many had ancestors there, it kept the Union together, the Union went on to aid in WW1 and WW2.
