church in the wilderness
Israel in the land is never called a church. In the wilderness Israel was a true "church" (Gr. ekklēsia = called-out assembly), but in striking contrast with the N.T. ekklēsia. This was a secular use of the term that came to mean “church” (of God) in the epistles. Here a reference to an assembly is all that is intended.
Here it simply means a group of people called to a specific purpose and should not lead us to find the church in the O.T
