A father takes his son to a ballgame. On the way home, they are in an accident. Both are rushed to the hospital where they are prepped for surgery. The surgeon who is to operate on the son recuses themself from surgery saying...I can't operate on the boy because he is my son.

How is this possible?

The surgeon was the boys' mother.

Interesting answer! But not the one I had in mind lol 😆
Are you sure you have the right riddle? I've quoted some lines from the well-known movie The Princess Bride, in order to better justify my previous answer. :p

Stronger than Steel
Buttercup: "You can't hurt me. Westley and I are joined by the bonds of love. And you cannot track that, not with a thousand bloodhounds. And you cannot break it, not with a thousand swords.”

This phrase emphasizes the unbreakable nature of true love, highlighting its resilience and strength, much like steel that cannot be easily damaged or defeated.

Softer than Grass - True love embodies gentleness and compassion.
Westley: “As you wish.”

This phrase represents the selflessness and nurturing aspects of true love, symbolizing a softness in how one responds to the needs of a beloved, akin to something gentle like grass.

Stops You in Your Tracks
Westley: "Hear this now: I will always come for you."

This promise from Westley captures how true love can compel someone to halt everything else in pursuit of their loved one, demonstrating its power to stop you in your tracks.

Simple to Pass
Westley: “This is true love. You think this happens every day?”

This line highlights that while true love is profound and rare, the understanding of it can feel simple and straightforward once one experiences it. Recognizing true love can often be a clear realization, despite its complexities.

Haha I shoulda thought of the consequences before I answered, I'm kinda riddled out!

🤔

What is stronger than steel, softer than grass; Stops you in your tracks, but is simple to pass?

Two words 🙂
I think I know this one all to well... :sneaky: as my face has been stopped in it's tracks too many times... spider web

Haha your premise is thought-provoking and solid. But alas, @Sculpt has unlocked what I had in mind so he is next up for riddle duty!

I concede - @Sculpt's "spider web" was an even better answer than mine, despite Princess Bride references (although sometimes, spider webs aren't so simple to pass? Especially at night!?!) Good riddle!

I await @Sculpt's challenge.

Don't feel defeated, @Sculpt is pretty good at figuring out what I'm thinking lol 😆. Good effort though, you even quoted no higher authority than Wesley 4:12! 😜

And I guess they're always simple to pass if you don't mind coming away with some webbing (and maybe a dead fly) stuck to your face. 🤔

😆 Webbing and dead fly in my face is not my greatest concern - a hideous, poison-fanged arachnid in my hair, on my back or under my shirt are more my fears on these types of occasion! :p

I think the closest reference from Westley are the ROUS - Rodents Of Unusual Size. Perhaps the real-world equivalent would be Arachnids Of Unusual Size - AOUS?

This better not be referencing some obscure musical instrument from southeast Polynesia that nobody has ever heard of. 😑 😜

Its obviously the humble earthworm! The earthworm has neither mouth nor ears, yet it must be able to speak to its fellow earthworms in the dirt, or how else would it communicate? It can somehow hear the pecking of the birds as it will retreat into its burrow, yet has no ears of which we can speak. It has no body worthy of note, but is little more than an unpleasant-looking, elongated clump of wriggling living protein, which comes especially alive during bouts of rainfall (and which are often accompanied by wind).

P.S. My second guess was going to be obscure musical instrument from Southeast Polynesia that nobody has ever heard of! :p So if it's that, you get the prize!

That is an excellent guess. But alas, no, not an earthworm.

I wonder if this is actually a tough one? It's hard to judge when you know the answer, right? :)

The clues are in the riddle. I think it will come to somebody. I think the "hear without ears" is the most obscure (least helpful) part of the riddle. So, that's my clue.
