One of its ancestors is a metaloid but the password itself is generally not metallic unless altered for a specific purpose......like if you want to compete with Tiffany.

There are substances that exist naturally that have a "glassy" appearance or are "glass-like"; however, 'glass' itself (what we know as 'glass' - that is man-made) does not occur naturally in a gritty state.
the glass crafter has to start with sand to make glass, which makes sand pretty. It's glass.
Sand is a major component of most glass but sand itself is not glass. That's why I said sand was close.... the origins of glass are "gritty" (sand), but the finished product generally isn't.
There are also different types of glass, depending on the application or what is to be "wrought". Heat-resistant glass like Pyrex requires borosilicate as well.
@Mem was on the right track with the Tiffany reference, carnival glass was normal glass that was sprayed with metallic salts during production to produce an iridescent sheen known as "Poor man's Tiffany". It is quite beautiful!
I do not care about winning the puzzle - just wanted to point out that 'glass' does not seem to fit the first line of the original clue.

Most glass starts out its life as sand, which is gritty.
Sand starts out its life as rocks, shells, etc, which are arguably a bit gritty But not so much as sand is.
I see snackersmom's point (my start in life is gritty... she's speaking as though she were glass) and I see Gary's point too, because I kind of thought the glass angle was covered by the sand guess. But glass is not sand. Regardless, maybe I technically got it right, but Gary can come up with the next puzzle if he wants to.
There used to be rocket scientist that lived in the studio apartment behind ours. When he hung his pants out to dry on the clothesline, we could see that he put way much starch in his pants. For all the complexity of his mind, he had corny pants, but that was exactly what was so endearing about him. I often have to piggyback on your keying in on the clues, so I appreciate your contribution to any win counts I might have accumulated.
