John 1:4 & 5
"In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome* it.
We should not be surprised or dismayed if unbelievers do not understand us. And no doubt and/or unbelief can overcome God's word. If we will stand on God's word alone, Satan can do nothing to overcome us.
Often, it seems as if we are not shining all that brightly. We need to remember first that if God says something, it is true no matter what. Those who are born again have Life and so they have the light. There may obstructions to the light. The sun still shines on the stormiest day, but clouds darken the sky. We may be clouded by unconfessed sin, or by unforgiveness. We come into the Christian life with many attitudes that need correcting and we know little of God's word or His ways. God will transform us as we ask Him to deliver us.
As we are cleansed from those things that hinder us (Hebrews 12:1),we will shine more brightly. We rarely see the change. Others will see. If someone says that you are different, be very careful. It is easy for pride to rise up and undo all the good work that God has done. Be quick to acknowledge that it is Jesus, not you.
Does it work? Yes. Some time ago, my wife and I went to a restaurant we've been to a few times. We were just being ourselves. The young waitress told us that we were to loveliest couple she had met. A waitress meets a lot of people. I immediately said that she was seeing Jesus, not me. We were the last customers and the kitchen was closed. We spent the next 20 minutes or so witnessing to the young woman. She had every excuse to leave us and start clearing tables. She was drawn to Jesus in us. If she knew me 20 years ago, she would have run and hid!
Let God change you and set you free from that which hides the Light of Christ that dwells in you now. It's peace and joy even when troubles come.
