Back in the 1970s people were saying that we should read the 'Late Great Planet Earth' by Hal Lindsey, a best seller for its time, well Lindsey was sure that the rapture was going to take place in 1981 with the end of the ages in 1988. Didn't happen! Chuck Smith, God bless him as he did a lot to get the gospel out there, but I have tended to not listen to what he said about end times because he made the same prediction in a books such as 'Future Survival' in which he said, “From my understanding of biblical prophecies, I am convinced that the Lord is coming for His Church before the end of 1981. I could be wrong but it’s a deep conviction in my heart and all my plans are predicated upon this belief.”
Smith at least said he could be wrong about it and he admitted he was wrong about it when it didn't happen but has Lindsey ever done the same thing? The premise was based upon Israel coming back into the Holy Land in 1948 and that this would be the last generation being that they surmised that a generation is 40 years, 1948+40=1988-7 years for the tribulation which would have made the rapture happening in 1981. I understand that Lindsey then speculated that the generation is 70 years which would mean the rapture should have happened in 2011 but without making a prediction as to not get mud on his face again. Has he now adjusted his premise to a generation being 100 years?
As I pointed out, Lindsey's book was a best seller as is Hagee's book and Blitz's book probably is racking up a lot of sales also. But I don't need to listen to what some best selling author has to say as I can go to the source, the Bible and, again, I don't need to listen to the Hagees, the Blitzs, and the Lindseys of this world. Smith's works on the subject back in the day were not big sellers and are out of print now and I would venture to say that he probably wishes he never wrote them but I picked up a couple of used paperbacks that are still out there.

I remember that passage. Jesus said he did not know the end date, that only God himself knew.
A miserable record of failure, indeed. It doesn't stop people from trying to figure it out though. I think the problem is that despite Matthew’s announcement that “... about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Mt 24:36), Revelation gives ‘signs’. The giving of signs opens the whole field up to investigation and many are fascinated by the search. I have talked with many who think the end is immanent and it doesn’t seem to phase them that many, now dead, expected the end in their own life times. If the pattern continues most, if not all of our contemporaries, who expect the end themselves will be in their own graves long before anyone sees that day come. This is why I always mention the book, A History of the End of the World. Those who bother to look at it will gain a perspective that they are now lacking.JesusIsAll said:
