yer but telling him to abandon his relationship with his friends is wrong they are not the problem dont you think thats being alittle unhuman

There is a term which is not commonly used in atheistic circles, being a biblical analogy. The term is 'unequally yoked'. This term refers to a yoke of oxen, who have been harnessed together to work in a field. A man named Paul in one of his letters to the church of Corinth, warned that body of believers, to avoid being unequally yoked together with unbelievers. This analogy depicts two oxen pulling in two different directions, which has the potential to create confusion and a dangerous imbalance, which, when applied to Christian/non-Christian relationships, wars against ones commitment to Christ.

This was not slanderous or inhuman, but very practical. Someone who has accepted that Jesus died for their sins and acknowledges his authority as Lord, has a hope of entering heaven, but also has a responsibility on earth to maintain a life of obedience to God's word. The word of God, not being considered by most atheists, also defines sin, a concept also not considered in atheistic circles.

Associations in this world are not limited or even discouraged, but when those relationships/friendships begin to introduce doubt or persuade a Christian to consider rebellion against God, the relationship itself becomes a liability.

i think that guy is seriusly over reacting on relationships between different cultures at my university we have a multifaith center we have christians muslims jews hinduism etc and they get along just fine even with athesit they respect each other and their belifs and have fun together. they have relationships with not just one culter but many and yet that hasnt become a reliabilty

I also have taught about how they have fun but guess what its NOT worth it.
Because what about when they get locked up? (taken to jail) What about when they are sick?
What about when they get hurt or when someone has a disease who are they going to turn to?
Tell me?
If God is mad at them he might not answer their prayers right away but when you are close to God he heals you =D & he protects you especially through hard times =)

I prayed for you.
& take my advice from a 18 year old is NOT worth having fun without God in your life.
Its not worth living without him.
Because everyone is fake & no one is truly your friend. Been there i used believe in God But i was more focused on having fun or trying to make friends.
they were all fake they wernt there for me when i needed them the most & guess who was?
God & ONLY God he was there through all the depression & even when i dint go to church or read the bible he was still there holding on to me waiting for me or trying to make me turn to him.
Getting closer to God was the best decision i have made in my life.
He is there for me, now i dont feel completely alone & when i have school problems or other problems i pray & he helps me out =D
He is my God, Friend, father, Protector, Saviour & lover =D

You should start reading the bible if you dont, at least 1 sentence & then more & more.
& piece of advice try to hang out with your church friends trust me make good friends with Christian people who go to church.
I regret not going to church for my 13-16 years i hardly went & i dint make good friends with them like i should have, Now i see how they are close like a family while i am in the corner regreting that i dint get closer to them & learn more about God like i should have.

So you want to be of the world? So you are willing to give up salvation in order to be worldly?

Please don't misunderstand. The original post presented a dilemma resulting from a desire to compromise. This is not about tolerance or cultural harmony. This is a case which clearly depicts the potential struggles which can ensue in the lives of Christians, when relationships with those who do not share their belief in Christ, begin to negatively influence their relationship with God.

all im saying is these people are firsnds with each and they dont so the chances that its his is making him become atheist is bs the problem is within him

hey jordan..
i know how that can feel sometimes.. but God says that the christian life will not be easy. But it is well worth it. It's hard sometimes to live for God. But what is miss-leading is the carefree lifestyle that non-Christians lead is sinful and leads to hurt (physical/emotional/eternal) What I've found in my short 15 years (hehe) is that God is the only one that can entirely fill me up and give me fulfilling joy and completeness. Most things in life worth living for aren't just a walk in the park and neither is this.
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it."
the narrow gate.... kinda like walking on a very small unpathed path up the side of a steep mountain. not easy right? but worth it. (i mean isn't that how we grow? through hardships?)
wide gate, broad road... i believe this indicates how the sinful lifestyle appears easier (but in the end it leads to destruction) and this path is widely accepted. it appears as a big highway, inviting, fun, easy. but once you start riding it you find thats not always so. after a while of riding, you see indications of a huge drop off at the end of the road, but you dont wanna believe it. "impossible" you think, for its all been easy so far. then you get there. the road drops off and you fall off a huge cliff. some have taken the warning signs before and have turned around to find the narrow path. most havent. my heart breaks for them and i pray that God will soften their hearts and they will find the truth.
well, i hope this analogy helped.. im not very good with words (its much clearer in my mind,lol)
may God bless you, and may you never give up on God because he will never ever give up on you.
im praying for you!

this is a question only you can only answer for yourself seeking advice here is gona be one sided and one day you may think did i make this choice or did these people choose it for me. yes i am an athesist and im not going to tell you to be one some things in life you have to decide for yourself

I think what the problem your having is not realizing that this is a Christian website, so the advice is going to be mostly one-sided. And as Christians, we dont want to lose anyone from the fold.

I understand you are an atheist, and apparently proud of that fact. But if you come to a Christian website, you must expect the responses to be of a certain type. I am pretty sure that Jordan understood that, or he would not have sought out Christian advice. He apparently is already aware of atheist advice.

And no matter whether the struggle is within him or from pressure from his friends, we are still going to give as sound, biblical advice as we can. We may be wrong, we may be right, but most importantly, we are with GOD.

Surely if we can accomodate your point of view, you can tolerate ours?

Respectfully,

Debbie

i was telling him not to seek advice because its something he would have to make up on his own i have to give the reason why even if it is stateing the obvious

Agreed. It is not likely that he will adopt a position of atheism. This would be impossible, if his initial profession was sincere. Those who have genuinely experienced the Love and Power of God and the cleansing of sin, will undoubtedly only frustrate themselves if they choose to go back into rebellion.

The progressive change that is initiated, when one accepts the Lord Jesus into his/her life, is often one which is taken for granted. It is usually not until we begin to compromise, that we begin to comprehend the contrast between life in rebellion, and life in obedience to God's word.

Thanks everyone for your encouraging words and your anecdotes. It really, really means a lot.

As I said in my original post, I do honestly love Jesus, but I am terrible at showing it. I'm lazy, too easily tempted, ungrateful. It is easy to say I am a Christian, but frustratingly difficult for me to do it. "It is easy to find truth, it is hard to face it, and harder still to follow it." - Archbishop Fulton Sheen. This is wayyy too true.

Hey! You're showing that you Love Jesus!
You love Him!
You try! and try! and that's what counts!
I do it too!! and it hurts when i know that i should be doing something for Him, and that brings me to Him!
You are showing it. and you know what? Coming for help in HERE, is showing that you are trying, BECAUSE you love Him!

Keep it up, don't EVER leave Him, because He will never leave YOU!!

It might be hard for some or at times but you know what With God ITs NOT, Because the happiness he gives you a long with love is MUCH more better than anything else in this world =)
& look how much God loves you.
All these brothers & sisters he sent to help you with advice & to pray for you.

do you have anyone support you, are you alone in this life
it sees it is easier for them, but life is never easy

Ecclesiastes 12

1-2 Honor and enjoy your Creator while you're still young,
Before the years take their toll and your vigor wanes,
Before your vision dims and the world blurs
And the winter years keep you close to the fire.

3-5 In old age, your body no longer serves you so well.
Muscles slacken, grip weakens, joints stiffen.
The shades are pulled down on the world.
You can't come and go at will. Things grind to a halt.
The hum of the household fades away.
You are wakened now by bird-song.
Hikes to the mountains are a thing of the past.
Even a stroll down the road has its terrors.
Your hair turns apple-blossom white,
Adorning a fragile and impotent matchstick body.
Yes, you're well on your way to eternal rest,
While your friends make plans for your funeral.

6-7 Life, lovely while it lasts, is soon over.
Life as we know it, precious and beautiful, ends.
The body is put back in the same ground it came from.
The spirit returns to God, who first breathed it.

8 It's all smoke, nothing but smoke.
The Quester says that everything's smoke.

may I add this too:

i was studying the Word and this came up:

Psalms 73

(please bear in mind that i do not mean to put your friends in this list at all! I know they are precious to you, and you can use this to help yourself and them)

1. Surely God is good to Israel,
to those who are pure in heart.
2. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold. (like many of us)
3.For I envied the arrogant when I saw the
prosperity of the wicked. (your friends? again, i am no saying they are wicked, but are away from God's Will)
4.They have no struggies;
Their bodes are healthy and strong.
5.They are free from the burdens common to man;
they are not plagued by human ills.
6.Therefore pride is their necklace;
they clothe themselves with violence.
7.From their callous hearts comes inquity;
the evil conceits of their minds know no limits.
8.They scoff, and speak with malice;
in their arrogance they threaten oppression.
9.Their mouths lay claim to haven,
and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10.Therefore their people turn to them
and drink up waters in abundance.
11.They say, "How can God know?"
Des the Most High have knowledge?"
12.This is what the wicked are like-(non-followers??)
always carefree, they increase in wealth,
13.Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure;
in vain have I washed my hand in innocence
14.All day lon gI have been plagued;
I have been puniched every morning.
15.If I had said. "I will speak thus,"
I would have betrayed your children.
16.When I tried to understand all this,
I was oppressive to me
17.till I entered the sanctuary of God;
then I understood their final destiny.
18.Surely you place them on slippery ground;
You cast them down to ruin.
19.How suddenly are they destroyed,
completely swept away by terrors!
20.As a dream when one awakes, so
when You raise, O Lord, You will
despise them as fantiasies.
21.When my heart was grieved and my
spirit embittered,
22.I was senseless and ignotant; I was a
brute beast before you.
23.Yet I am always with You;
You hold me by my right hand.
24.You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward You will take me into
glory.
25.Whom have I in heaven but You?
and earth has nothing I want (might read once again Ellie's post #4)
besides You.
26.My flesh and my heart may fail, but
God is the strength of my heart and my portion
forever.
27.Those who are far from You will perish (reach for your friends! :) )
28.But as for me, it is good to be near God
I have made the Sovereing Lord my refuge;
I wil tell of all your deeds. (reach for your friends!)

There's many more psalms you can look for, but this one, really reminded me of you.
God Loves You!! no matter what!!

Wow, thanks a lot chrisanzu and others. Psalm 73:26 really, really struck a chord with me. It's basically the simplest way to express how I feel. My heart and flesh are easily tempted away, and that is something I need to really work on, but at the end of the day God is there.

Yay!
Keep it up!
He will always be there for you!
God blesses you all the time!!
:)

Glad to hear that it got to you =)
Prayed for you again =)
Remember The path without God is not worth it because that path is a lonely path.
But God path is full of light & happiness =D

If this helps, I was in exactly the same position as you a few years ago, and it is a problem that my brother is facing at the moment.

At the time, i still claimed to be a christian and i prayed when i needed help, but i wouldn't say directly to anyone that i was a christian. I used to get really embarrassed and i felt really bad and hypocritical the whole time.

Then i found a sort of youth group at school. There were posters up saying this guy who had once been a criminal and had stabbed a policeman was coming in to talk to anyone who wanted to listen. I went along, cos i thought it sounded interesting and i wanted to get back to God, I just didn't know how.

He told us his story and sang Amazing Grace, because he said that that was the song that sort of showed what had happened to him. By the end i was in floods of tears, and he came over to talk to me. He told me that God loved me, which really was all i needed to hear, and he told me to say Halleluia, which i did, over and over.

After that i knew that i wanted to feel like he did, and i got this sudden rush of certainty that i was going to follow the Lord. Now, Halleluia is sort of my word, for whenever i feel down or i need something from God, and it makes me go back to that day when i recognised Jesus as my saviour.

I'm not saying that now being a Christian is really easy, cos its not, but i have that certainty that God is watching over me, and it really helps.

So, moral. Basically, there are hard times for all of us in our walks as Christians, and the only advice i can give you is be true to God and yourself, and go through any doors that God opens up for you.

And if that guy who came to our school, i think his name was Daniel, ever reads this, then thank you for giving me the knowledge i needed to be a Christian again.

Wow, that was really long. Sorry guys, and i sympathise with those of you that skipped to the end!

I just wanna say that reading the posts on this thread has been a really good thing - I've seen sensible, solid, uplifting, true, faith-building things said here. When Christians pull together and work as a team to encourage and edify, it feeds not only the person asking for support, but others reading on who perhaps have begun to feel disheartened by less than edifying experiences, or simply a lack of them. I really commend the church - I don't mean a particular building or denomination - I mean you guys, the body of Christ, which is what the church really is - for being good stewards of information and good vessels for his love in this case. I see a glimmer of light where it's been gloomy, and tasted a morsel of food after much starving.
