As a Catholic I am very glad that the administrative staff posted this concern, because there are a lot of misconceptions particularly the one of Mary.
First, Mary is not worshiped by Catholics. We pray for her intercession. So in Scripture we see Christ obeying Mary several times because he is her son and a son always obeys her Mother. This is also true in Heaven. Christ was as much God on while on Earth as he is in Heaven and He is ultimately the one that answers our prayers and gives us grace, but Mary is there to pray for us on our behalf which magnifies the prayer itself. That is why in the "Hail Mary" we pray at the end "Pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death." We do not say anything along the lines of "we worship you, or we exalt you...etc" to glorify her.
Second, "mother of God." It is very important that the English translation of the Bible is incomparable to the Greek in terms of literal accuracy. And we all know of course the New Testament scriptures were originally written in Greek. This controversy has been around since St. Cyril and Nestorius. St. Cyril, writing in Greek and Latin, and the Greek version of the Bible uses the term "Theotokos" to refer to Mary. This directly translated is "God-bearer." Now, Nestorius was against this because he understood this as meaning, that she bore God, as in God the Father (remember God is three in one, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). This is understandable since it is illogical for her to bear what created her. So there are three persons in one. But rather she is God the Son bearer. So Nestorius wanted to change the term to "Kristotokos" which of course is Christ-bearer. However, because Christ is also God (consubstantial with the Father - Nicene Creed) and Mary gave birth to Christ she is called "Mother of God." In conclusion, Mary is Mother of God (not of the Father), but Mother of God the Son, the incarnate Word.
So in conclusion our English language unfortunately is not sufisticated enough to verbalize such complex theology, but that is as Christian we must always try to get to the bottom of answers even if it means challenging ourselves by looking at historical writing and translations of Scripture.
My goal as a Catholic on this forum is not convert, people can decide for themselves what they need to do by following their conscience, so whether something is considered "heresy" or not it should be kept to provoke discussion. God gave us free will, and we need to make use of this free will because it can help us get closer to Him.
God Bless and I do enjoy this site for prayer and discussion, very useful resource.
