without first learning how to read, much of whatever else we think we learn is so very limited and undeveloped.

You're starting to sound like Ben Franklin! (Oh, and not the beliefs, just the really quotable lines :D).

That's a great idea. Unfortunately, I cannot really concentrate on the Kindle, and when it comes to remembering, well forget that. I've tried my sister's with disappointing results.

Yes, a Kindle (although I have one) is a horrible instrument upon which to try and read. There is something about that "dumb" blinking full pages ahead that seems to contribute to missing so much. That is why I try to convert all my books to WORD format, and read them on the "scrolling" screen of a computer... if I don't happen to have a hard copy of the book.

Ben, "who?" LOL (But, "Thank you.")

All joking aside, that would be a very typical response you might get from the average-person-on-the-street interview. Have you ever watched any of them that they do at some college campuses? Sad, indeed.

I rarely read fiction. Ever. My shelves are completely non-fiction. My teachers used to try and convince me to read fantasy and all that.

When I was a teen I really enjoyed the "Cirque Du Freak" book series. They are short and highly entertaining. It's about a boy who discovers this secret underground carnival and ends up getting turned into a vampire and having some crazy adventures. Very well written and it has one of the best endings.. I'd like to re-read them at some point. It's a horror saga and really well done if you like that kind of thing.

Vladimir Nabokov is another wonderful writer if you're a little older. His controversial book "Lolita" is a favorite of mine. It's considered one of the greatest books ever published or published in the last century. The way he crafts language is pure poetry. But it's a very dark book and probably better for older teens, not younger ones. "Go Ask Alice" might be a good one for teens. It's allegedly a true diary of a girl who went on a downward spiral into drugs and other bad things...It's a dark, captivating tale, but a good book to read as it shows the dangers of that lifestyle.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions!

I've heard of them and the very sad results; never thought it worth depressing myself that far by watching them lol. My sister is going to a physical college for a couple of semesters to finish up her degree, and some of the stories she tells about the other people...the ignorance is horrifying.
