When I was a teen I really enjoyed the "Cirque Du Freak" book series. They are short and highly entertaining. It's about a boy who discovers this secret underground carnival and ends up getting turned into a vampire and having some crazy adventures. Very well written and it has one of the best endings.. I'd like to re-read them at some point. It's a horror saga and really well done if you like that kind of thing.
Vladimir Nabokov is another wonderful writer if you're a little older. His controversial book "Lolita" is a favorite of mine. It's considered one of the greatest books ever published or published in the last century. The way he crafts language is pure poetry. But it's a very dark book and probably better for older teens, not younger ones. "Go Ask Alice" might be a good one for teens. It's allegedly a true diary of a girl who went on a downward spiral into drugs and other bad things...It's a dark, captivating tale, but a good book to read as it shows the dangers of that lifestyle.
