So... you have the "lower 48" and then you have Alaska and Hawaii... and that makes 50.
The Virgin Islands are part of the U.S., as are American Samoa, District of Columbia, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands (Commonwealth), and Puerto Rico Commonwealth.
Is a Commonwealth considered an actual state? I kind of thought of them as 50 states + extras....am I wrong were these areas declared the 51st state?

None of the above listed regions are states, just territories. In some ways a US territory has the best of both worlds, many of the benefits of being part of the US without some of the headaches. A territory self-governs to a degree in the same way that an independent nation would, however persons born in US territories are considered to be US citizens.
Mental note to Blue Ladybug there are still just 50 states plus extras....I guess the Blond wasn't in such a dead sleep after all.

Thought for sure that there were 50 states. I would love to visit the 49th state one day. I will have to check with my travel agent who is soon to become my wife. First we are going to a state out west. She is planning our itinerary right now.

3.) What do you think your heavenly mansion will look like? I've asked God for an exception to be made in my case so i can have a little cabin by a lake in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nature.

5.) What's the strangest experience you've ever had? Hmmm. Hearing the popping sound that was the doctor pulling out my wisdom teeth and not having it hurt at all (yay novicane). Finding out that the blobby meat stuff in the soup that I thought was liver was actually blood. Guy friend randomly commenting to me that he picked up a prostitute the other night. Oh and jet lag can really mess me up too sometimes.

You know you are a nerd when you notice that this song goes through the states in alphabetical order and you wonder why they don't make it more educational and do the states in the order they were admitted to the union. I have always liked "Coventry Carol," even though the melody is kind of haunting, and not the most festive of Christmas songs. I liked it even as a kid. As an adult and believer I also appreciate the meaning of the words as I could not before.

I am not a very picky eater. I try to avoid casseroles with "cream of ...." canned soups. It's easy to make this stuff yourself, it tastes better, and you know what's in it.
I don't know if I have any special ones...
Christmas morning! And save the paper!!!
A few years ago when I was newly separated, I was low on funds. My kids knew this and were okay with knowing that we would have a modest celebration that year. We also decided that with extra that I was able to scrounge up, we would buy some ducks for African villagers through World Horizons.
My class at church somehow caught wind that I was dirt poor, and had collected $200 among its members and presented this to me mid December. Later, my kids saw the envelope, so I told them where it came from. At first, they wanted to give it back. I told them that I was a little embarrassed too, but that it would be rude and ungrateful to return it. So they decided that instead of me Christmas shopping for them, I should use the money to buy more ducks and mosquito nets.
That was the coolest Christmas ever! Well, maybe except for that one in the manger a while back...

2. What is the absolute worse thing you think is served on the table when you get together with people for Thanksgiving?
I love everything served for TG in our family. Probably the least appetizing is cranberry sauce.
3. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
My girls and I stay home all day on Christmas Day, just resting and playing games, watching movies and enjoying one another. It's something we all treasure and look forward to every year.
4. Do you open gifts Christmas Eve or Morning? Why?
We open one gift on Christmas Eve, just for fun. The rest we open on Christmas morning.

Two years ago, we'd just moved into a tiny little rent house, and were starting our new lives together. The neighborhood we lived in was historic with little postage stamp yards that belonged in magazines. Everyone decorated for every holiday, and people walked on the sidewalks in the evenings, dogs barked... just a real American classic neighborhood. (We'd never lived in town before so this was all new to us.) This is our favorite memory... that holiday season in our little house, all crammed up together, cooking in the tiny kitchen, eating on a card table, curling up on the sofa to watch movies. On Christmas day, it snowed (unheard of in this part of Texas on Christmas) and we ran out and played in the street with the snow coming down. The Lord was everywhere with us that year, giving us joy and sweet memories.

Putting up the manger without Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in the livingroom....just shepherds and livestock initially. Mary and Joseph begin at the other end of the house and every day we would move them closer. Baby Jesus doesn't show up until Christmas Day.

Christmas Eve, to prevent gifts from being a distraction on Christmas Day.

Discovering my older brothers helping my parents put my Christmas gifts together when I was little. It was so sweet.
