IMO, Jesus meant that what His Father sent Him for was finished (completed). Of course, we need to know exactly why He was sent. The Gospels gives us several reasons why He was sent.

Yes, even the elect-chosen-called have the free will to backslide. However, many NT verses promise that God will get them to heaven. The Lord is God Almighty, all-powerful, etc. and He knows how to accomplish His will.
