    Saved by Water

1 John 5:1 tells us exactly what must be believed to be born again. “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/1/1jn.5.1.KJV So, if you believe...

    Saved by Water

The punctuation in P72 and Sinaiticus reinforces what you are saying. If my remembrance is corrrect P72 is the oldest Greek text we have. The semicolon it contains tells us that the word baptism begins a new thought. That semicolon is in Sinaiticus too.

Here is another inspired verse that has to be true. “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/59/1jn.5.1.ESV This verse is one reason that I don’t...

What Should Nicodemus Have Understood? John 3:3-5

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:13‬ ‭KJV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/1/eph.1.13.KJV

What Should Nicodemus Have Understood? John 3:3-5

The Greek word translated as repent means to change one’s mind or think differently afterwards. When a person comes to believe in Jesus their mind has changed from unbelieving or unknowing to believing. The meaning of the Greek word for repentance (metanoeo) is satisfied.

I have heard that too, but if you read about Sinaiticus you will find that the punctuation in it is discussed and recognized as legitimate. The thing about P72 is the scribe made room between the words for the dot. So, it seems intentional, and this is, I believe, the oldest Greek text of 1...

    Saved by Water

I am generally in agreement with you on this. I am responding to this post to add some information that I hope someone can comment on. A few years back, while studying this verse I started looking at it in the Greek manuscripts. I stumbled on something interesting in P72. In P72 the verse is...

The only Evidence of Salvation - by Brother Gregg Jackson

I like this passage. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every...

What Should Nicodemus Have Understood? John 3:3-5

“And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:23‬ ‭ESV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/59/1jn.3.23.ESV Belief is obedience.

What Should Nicodemus Have Understood? John 3:3-5

1 John 5:1 puts being born of God in the past for someone who believes, not something that will happen at a future time.

Eternal Security: What do you do with James 2?

Yeah, I agree. Maybe that is why this test is so simple. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has...

Eternal Security: What do you do with James 2?

For James 2:17 and 22 I think it helps to look at the analogy in James 2:26: “For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” ‭‭James‬ ‭2:26‬ ‭ESV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/59/jas.2.26.ESV Here the word body (soma) means a physical body and is analogous...

Eternal Security: What do you do with James 2?

On James 2:14 when you look at it in Greek. One of the possible ways to render can in “Can that faith save him?” is unless. so this could be: Unless that faith save him. In light of Romans 4:5 this seems realistic. Also, consider Romans 10:9-11. “And to the one who does not work but...

Eternal Security: What do you do with James 2?

Consider this from Romans 4: “What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as...

    Saved by Water

If this is talking about speaking in tongues and it says you cannot tell where it comes from, then it doesn’t provide evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit. If you don’t know where it is coming from then no one would know who did it.

If they are not, then wouldn’t this be a false statement? “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.” ‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/1/1jn.5.1.KJV

    Saved by Water

“Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.”...
