What did Jesus 'finish' on the Cross - Please elaborate - scripture please - thank you
John 19:28-30
28 After this, when Jesus realized that everything was now
completed, he said (in order to fulfill the Scripture), “I’m thirsty.” 29 A jar of sour wine was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. 30 After Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.
There are too many options to what he could have been talking about. I would want to research the different possibilities more, and not make any assumtions...
"It is finished"...
1. ... could have been talking about the fulfillment of scripture he mentioned in verse 28.
2. ... could have been talking about the fulmillment of the first covenant by his body paying the for the earthly penalties associated with breaking the laws.
3. ...could have been referring to the fulfillment of passover with him being the sacrificial lamb (I believe the spring feasts have been fulfilled and the autumn feasts will be fulfilled when he returns).
4. ...could have simply been referring to his role here in the flesh on earth.
Those are some options that come to mind. I only highlighted the word "completed" in verse 28, because it is the same greek word used for "finished" in verse 30.
