Purely unfounded speculation on your part. You do not want to see what scripture reveals.

Your opinion is not based on sound bible doctrine. Doctrines that serve the temporal flesh are for the flesh. Christ's kingdom is not of flesh and blood but of Spirit.

If scripture is admonishing you then pay heed to it.

For the cause of Christ
Roger
and that is your unbiblical opinion ok and ? There you with your biblical cursing again thinking i am being admonished by you LOL hahahah troll

Apologies should be accepted graciously. I would have to check as to what triggered the apology, but even so.

Love

…6Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be restrained; where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed.…

"Just as God is called “love” (1 John 4:8), Jesus is called our “hope” (1 Timothy 1:1). Hope not only concerns our belief in Christ but describes who He is to us. The hope within us is Christ Himself. If He lives within us, His hope will be seen in how we treat others. Living with such an attitude reflects the way of Christ, leads to holy living, and brings glory to the heavenly Father (Matthew 5:17).

Part of showing love is hoping, and part of hoping is seeing the potential of others. As Goethe said, “If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming.” In love, we can always be hopeful and show confidence in others. This does not rule out confrontation or the redress of wrongs, but the impact of a positive attitude in the life of another person is incalculable.

How many times in the Old Testament did Israel fail God? Yet their failure was never final. Love never says die. Peter failed Jesus, yet the Lord restored him. The Corinthians failed Paul in some ways, yet the apostle, in love, patiently corrected them and called them “sanctified” (1 Corinthians 1:2). Love always points to a brighter day ahead. Love is the lifeline that the hurting can hold on to."

Love Always Hopes

To Jews. The Jews did not believe that Gentiles or semi-Gentiles (like the Samaritans) would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. So in the case of the Samaritans and Gentiles, there were visible manifestations (tongues). But those are anomalies for that period.
If speaking in tongues (the "modern" kind as some call it) didn't provide the benefits that are promised, I would agree with you. But I have it and can testify that yes, tongues operates today just as it did then...and provides the same benefits that were promised then.

And I don't mean that as some kind of argument point, because it's not an argument, it's just an experienced observation based on use.

Also, I wanted to agree on this quote. Apologies are kinda rare in the BDF, and I encourage "take 'em when you get 'em". :)

I was reared in a church that taught "speaking in tongues" and never believed it, although I believe it was necessary in Acts, etc. I saw and heard people doing it but I am sure it was fake. They used their "tongues" as a toy and a matter of pride.

One person, while she says she is no longer a believer, says that she can still "speak in tongues," having fun with it. I don't say anything because I told her I would not argue with her.

To keep it honest, I did have one incident a while before being kicked out of that church, but when I remember, I want to go wash my mouth out. It is a horrible memory.
If you've ever seen young children on a playground when one of them has gotten a new toy, you might begin to understand the bad behavior of some who have received speaking in tongues. The new toy on the playground is a good thing, but the behavior of the owner of the toy can be detestable.

I might not want to say it, but the same can happen in Holy Ghost churches when they don't have someone to teach them....or even for a short time while they are learning that lesson.

In the real world, we don't condemn the school or the parents when a child acts badly in this way....we teach the child to mature and use their new toy with love, to benefit all.

The same kind of teaching needs to occur in churches...which is a lot of what is going on in 1 Corinthians 12, 13, 14.

Spiritual gifts are good things, but they can be used improperly.

Love in Jesus,
Kelby

P.S. I don't like to associate spiritual gifts with "toys" but I do realize when a person receives the Holy Ghost they are a BABE in Christ and need to learn from scratch what that means. Babies and toddlers can be downright mean with how they use their abilities.

Consider how Elisha first used the power he'd just recieved after Elijah was taken up. He used it to kill a bunch of children. 2 Kings 2:23,24

For myself, the Holy Spirit is to be respected, treated as Who He is, not to be played with. :sneaky: People seem to forget Who He is.

I think that people take the word of God too lightly, forgetting that death and life are in the power of the tongue. Most people, including Christians, fail to learn to operate in much of any kind of power. That's a sad thing considering how much Jesus demonstrated how the power works, and was constantly trying to get his disciples to step up and use that power themselves. Then he died on the cross, rose again, departed to the father, and poured out the Holy Ghost so WE can have that same Spirit and Power living in us. And what do people do with that?? They DENY the POWER as it is written:

Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. - 2 Timothy 3:5 KJV

And I am SO glad that this particular posting is not in reply to any individual on this thread, because this is a message to ALL. STOP DENYING THE POWER! Learn what it is, how to use it, and how to use it in LOVE.

The bible says "the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power." - 1 Corinthians 4:20 KJV

And some on here have nothing but words... Others have power (because they have the Holy Ghost) but don't realize what they have.

How can people claim to have the Spirit of God but walk around with less power than the disciples were using before the Holy Ghost was even poured out??? What's wrong with this picture?? Is there no faith?

And I guess this part is for those who have actually experienced a little of the power of God... Weren't there some clues as to how and why the power of God showed up when he moved? For example, weren't people praying, reading, fasting and/or praising when God showed up? Do you think God is a respecter of persons and wouldn't show up if you did those things earnestly, too, or now, or again?

I'm stopping there for now (for a few reasons), but for those who claim to have God, you need to have more than words to have the kingdom of God.

Love in Jesus,
Kelby

One of the readings I read when considering tongues was Isaiah 28. I have not reread that one in a long, long time. I should study it.

I HOPE THIS TIME YOU RESPOND, OR AT LEAST PONDER WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN TO YOU. THIS IS THE STRONGEST POST I HAVE EVER WRITTEN, AND YOU DESERVE IT TOO.
Again, you persist with a very narrow perspective
. Have you read the New Testament? How is it that you claim to be an expert of something you know nothing about. YOU ARE BEING ARROGANT to pretend you know, when you don't know. I APPRECIATE that you are loved and blessed by God, but that will not stop me from telling you that you are wrong ...because you are AND you are doing harm. You have the option of walking away from all this if you choose, but don't argue with the Holy Spirit and HIS dispensation of the gifts. FOR WHO ARE YOU TO TELL HIM (HOLY SPIRIT) WHAT GIFTS, AND WHEN TO GIVE HIS GIFTS FOR HIS CHURCH?!!! THE ARROGANCE!!! If you had read the much earlier posts on this thread, you would have seen explanations for the different types of tongues. BUT HEY, I GUESS YOU ARE THE EXPERT, RIGHT?...OF SOMETHING YOU YOURSELF HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED...BE IT OUT OF YOUR INNATE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN OR BECAUSE OF YOUR SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND ARROGANCE.

YOU KEEP IGNORING SCRIPTURES THAT DON'T FIT YOUR NARROW VIEW---AND YOU ARE GOING AGAINST SOME AS WELL.

1st Corinthians 12:28
And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, next miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, various kinds of tongues.
SO, you say that there is only 1 type of tongues?!!! REALLY? Again, have you really read the New Testament?

Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy 1COR 1:14
ARE WE SUPPOSE TO IGNORE THIS TOO MR. MRS. DWR?
WELL, LET'S JUST THROW OUT THE ENTIRE NEW TESTAMENT, BECAUSE AFTER ALL, AS YOU STATED, IT IS OUTDATED IN EVERY SECTION THAT IT TALKS ABOUT GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT...RIGHT? SO, THEN THIS SCRIPTURE ON DESIRING THE GIFTS IS NO LONGER VALID BECAUSE THERE IS NO NEED FOR TONGUES?...so technically, in your expert opinion, you are not going against this scripture, RIGHT?

WHAT WORLD DO YOU LIVE IN THAT DOES NOT NEED FOR PEOPLE TO EDIFY THEMSELVES???!!!
Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. 1COR 14:4

So, I guess here you will tell me THAT NO ONE....NO ONE NEEDS TO EDIFY THEMSELVES in this time and climate we live in? REALLY...TONGUES IS OF NO USE??? We must build ourselves up constantly to help the church in turn. To say otherwise is to BE PRIDEFUL...LIKE YOU ALWAYS "HAVE IT TOGETHER"....THAT'S HOW FOOLISH MEN FALL.

I was 17 when I received my first gift of speaking in tongues. I am 58 now, almost 59. At the time, I did not know about any of this-the holy spirit and His gifts- when it happened. I had been raised somewhat Catholic, somewhat non-denominational...I merely wanted to feel close to God...And later, I received a sound beating from my mother. Much of my hair had been pulled out, my lip was torn, swollen and bleeding. I had bruises on my face, and I had lost consciousness. I thought I was going to die with her hands on my throat...because I had a gift she thought I should not have. Not because she was against the gift, but because she thought I was undeserving at my age. Yes, she was jealous, and I paid for her anger and jealousy.
And, along the way, I have lost many, many acquaintances and even family because I always choose God, and because I wasn't "cool". God doesn't care, they'd tell me...I was even told once that it must be easy for me to believe in God because I come from ignorant Hispanic people, and therefore my supposed stupidity was innate. (I have a masters with a 4.0 GPA, by the way, in case you too think I am ignorant for believing in the Holy Spirit and His gifts) I simply refuse to box God in to MY RATIONALS of what HE SHOULD, AND SHOULD NOT BE. He is not a fairy tale God from yesteryear that is confined only in written word on the pages of dusty books, and can only be visited in these pages. My God is
not impotent, NO, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

In my christian journey, I have given up all of these things, but I have gained something more precious, a relationship with the living, breathing God. I have since operated in other gifts, especially during missionary trips, and each time, I was surprised...yes, each time. I did not ask or conjure up these gifts, but they presented themselves in times when the need was there.....AND you say that there is no need...WHAT DO YOU KNOW??? SERIOUSLY! There is as much, if not more need in today's world for the gifts to be in operation. Perhaps you have always lived a privileged and cushy life, but others do NOT.
IF YOU ARE OFFENDED BY THIS POST, WELL, THEN TAKE IT TO GOD IN PRAYER...LET'S SEE WHAT HE SAYS.
The foundation of the new testament prophecy (tongues) is found in Isaiah 28

Tongue is prophecy. The word of God spoken in the language of all the nations of the world . Why make it into babble and call that self edifying.?

How would that bring glory to God?

Its doctrines where there is scheduled filling. Make a sound and fall backward sessions that are being tested today during this Pandemic. That I would think would be enough for a person to rethink. Why ? How am I being filled without someone laying on hands and other catching and causes a person to rise form being slain if the spirit?

Is there a alternate way to get filled?

The way I understand is is not so much less power for those who seeks after signs and wonders gospel .But more power than the has given. Self edifying .(self righteous) Not edifying God but rather. I did it, that confirms it .

Well I don't think people should be heresy hunters if that is what you mean. So what is to be done with them then?

I am asking with serious intent and not trying to be flippant.
Not sure if you have heard of the preacher Justin Peters...
He has cerebral palsy , and was going as a young lad to these kind of false preachers to be healed...

He has now in his older life got a ministry calling these false preachers out , in love and gentleness , and his heart is for all those caught up in these false teachers churches...

He has brought many to the foot of the cross Praise God , all the glory to God Amen...

One of the readings I read when considering tongues was Isaiah 28. I have not reread that one in a long, long time. I should study it.
Its the foundation. Always a good place to start.

The Easy Read Version seems to make the meaning of stammering lips (mocking) found in the King James clearer. Then the law spoken of in 1 Corinthians 14 :21-22 can aid in identifying which brothers and sisters we can warn of what I would call dark places. (oral traditions of men)

The new ceremonial law as a sign to the world is found in 1 Corinthian 11. Its a sign or what I would call a wedding invitation to all the nations to the whole world. In a hope they might search out prophecy the tongue of God . Like all ceremonial laws they are not to self-edifying .but rather edify the one wo who has the power to create anew.

The tongue of God, the new tongue of believers (they are temple of God) it the gospel can cast out demons that mock the spirit of judgement (falling backward slain in the Spirit). This is if the Spirit applies his power .

We plant the incorruptible seed he causes things to move forward and backward.

We can warn them to get off the high horse of oral traditions of corrupted mankind .(false doctrines poison) and pray.

Fast. . . offer the gospel our new tongue and pray God would apply

Below the Holy Spirit defines the word Dan as the spirit of judgement expressing the letter of the law. "Death"

Genesis 49:16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.

I agree that the gift of tongues accompanied the infilling but the purpose was a sign for the unbelieving Jews gathered in Jerusalem from all over the Roman empire,
The 120 went out and preached the Gospel and all heard it in their own tongue.
I already showed that the tongues being invented to omit the need of an interpreter in preaching is bizare in that paul says in an assembly an interpreter must interpret what was said in tongues.
That is a cessationist clever attempt that is foolish.
Imagine a meeting where a second interpreter needed to call back what was said,or the one preaching in a foreign language needed to call back in another language foreign to his audience.

Back to the cessationist drawing board.

No I have never heard of him. When people go out to prove false teaching and do so in their own strength, it is usually harsh and they will not help most people. But when a person does so by the leading of and with the power of the Holy Spirit, there can be a different outcome.

There are many false voices in the world saying they are prophets or teachers or what have you and yet God has never called them and has not put one single word in their mouth. There will be a day of reckoning when God separates the wheat from the chaff but for now we know those who really do belong to him by the fruit of their lives.

Prophesying. . the tongue of God is God giving his interpretation to all nations.

Tongues is prophecy. Prophecy is the word of God. Prophesying is declaring the word of God. all one in the same. some divide the word and ad new meaning.

Watched a preacher of TV the other day that was teaching 40% of the bible was prophecy and not the whole book.we are made aware of that wile of the evil one.

The Holy Spirit would not suggest look for a Jim Jones .the Jones town assembly. Only he had the true understanding of senseless sounds that make men fall backward slain in the spirit .

The spiritual unseen gifts are still active. They work in us to give us faith that comes from hearing God to believe the unseen things of God. . .

You call it vague, to me it is a fundamental detail that God (and the author Luke) intended the reader to take into consideration when placing ourselves at the scene in our minds. To understand the reaction of the people based on what they said. We know they must have said much more than this. But only these statements of all that must have been said are recorded. They are pivotal and foundational details not to be left out.

I propose that the same reason that these others mocking said these men are full of new wine is the same reason that people who see someone speak in tongues today say these men are crazy. They think they are babbling. From day one the saints who receive this gift have been persecuted as lunatic and so it will be until Jesus comes back. We are in good company. Keep praying in tongues and let the mockers mock.

So another benefit of speaking in tongues is that you will learn to face persecution and to keep a sweet spirit toward the haters.
But see right here, you just admitted that YOU had to add this interpretation to it when you said "We know they must have said much more than this", then you go on to assume, assert, and insert all of this-

"I propose that the same reason that these others mocking said these men are full of new wine is the same reason that people who see someone speak in tongues today say these men are crazy. You could very well be right on, but the fact of the matter is you have to add that, and God did not see fit to word it the way you are interpreting it.

I'm not trying to teach, correct, or "show you" at all here concerning actual tongues, but what I am trying to do is get you to acknowledge that what you said is not what the text says, that you have to assume the bit that you wrote. Again this may be a sound deduction and right on truth here, but even so you have to add what you're saying.
