If Scripture is your only inquiry, why do you come to the forum?

And why did you say we should look into how tongues are used today if you have no intention of looking into how tongues are used today?

Love in Jesus,
Kelby
I meant how we see them used . With that i never implied or said that what we 'see 'out there is geniune . Could God use a language to reach another, yes he could. Have i experienced it ? no . Can i support it from scripture? And I meant on this particular issue of tongues. The scripture would be my only basis for believing it .

Just re-read and noticed this in your posting. Jesus did NOT explain to Peter why he was going to wash his feet. He only explained it AFTER he washed his feet. Jesus required submission without understanding in this case. John 13:5-12 <-- I post references so people can reread rather than relying on our imperfect memories of what happened. Overlooking details is one of the ways Satan gets a foot-hold.

Consider what Eve said to the serpent as an example of this...
Genesis 3:2-4 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: [3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. [4] And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Well, the serpent was correct that they would not die for TOUCHING the fruit. Eve had made an assumption and inserted a detail that God did NOT say. And that gave the serpent a footing to say what he said.

Love in Jesus,
Kelby
Jesus did explain the context of the servent :)

Well, if you're willing to look into how we 'see' it "out there" in comparison to scripture, I can at least volunteer to speak as one who has it and operates in it. For you that would be "out there" but for me it's closer than looking in a mirror. :)

To do that openly and honestly (which is the only way it will be of true value to you) I have to make myself vulnerable. That means I have to be willing to share the mistakes along with the good stuff. So it's important for you to decide whether you want to look with mercy... or persecution.

Also, I feel it important to emphasize the fact that there WILL BE mistakes. (It seems youtube LOVES to emphasize the mistakes). And your decision whether to look with mercy or persecution will greatly affect your conclusions. And we can start that process of deciding whether to look with mercy or persecution by looking at a few biblical examples. (some might seem strange)

1.) Proverbs 14:4 KJV
"Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox." <-- A.K.A. Will you judge a situation by how messy it is... or by how much is being accomplished? (overall, not by the mistakes)

2.) 2 Samuel 6:1-7 KJV
"Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. [2] And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims. [3] And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. [4] And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. [5] And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. [6] And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. [7] And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God." <-- A few points here. When the power is greater, mistakes are highlighted and can carry a heavy cost. So the question is, When a mistake is made, will you blame the power as being bad, or search internally to see where you yourself might have made a mistake. And will you step away from the power that seems to have made bad things happen, or will you try again? (Read the rest of the chapter if you want to know what David chose).

3.) John 5:5-9 KJV
And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. [6] When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? [7] The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. [8] Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. [9] And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. <-- Are you able to correctly discern whether Jesus was right or wrong for telling this man to do something forbidden on the sabbath? Will you be able to correctly discern when it seems rules about "speaking in tongues" are being broken or disregarded? (This will come into play when we look at some things that happen with tongues...even in the bible.)
4.) Psalm 39:1-3 KJV
I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. [2] I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. [3] My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue," <--(This one I'm just going to explain because of the fact that we won't be perfect when we start doing things.) When my wife used to bad-mouth me, I would just take it silently because I didn't want to over-react and say something inappropriate (similar to how she was speaking to me). So the situation got worse. Eventually God showed me that the value of what would be fixed was greater than the mistakes that would be made along the way. So I had to begin to correct her, even though I knew I would be saying some things wrong. So it is with speaking in tongues.. At first the person is given the ability...and they might do things wrongly...(like a baby learning to walk, or talk appropriately)... but they have to go through this stage of mistakes in order to reap the benefits of proper use (which comes as you work out the details).

I think that's enough for one posting. :) Next we can start scrutinizing how I, Kelbyofgod, use "speaking in tongues" today , if you're still up for that.

Love in Jesus,
Kelby

Heres the thing, I don't judge anyone on this . Nor do I see myself as to have answers for everything. I don't. My journey has been one of continuing to come back to the Scriptures. The more I've read the bible 'literally ' the more I've understood it and grown . I can't judge anothers experience and i try not to judge someone's relationship with God . I never want to affect someone's relationship with God . Thats precious and between them and God . Can someone convince me thorough what they experience or could I experience say 'tongues ' and it not be from God? Yes i believe so . I've heard from those that do 'speak in tongues 'how they will admit some are counterfeit. Ultimately as yet i do not believe from scripture the 'tongues ' we see today is biblical. If i was to just base it off what i see then i would easily be convinced . The same may be true for loss of salvation . If I was to go off of testimonies , from what i see when it looks like a person no longer believes. Maybe we see a former professing Christian turned atheist ,it could easily be seen as loss of salvation. The same with ' healing '. If I was to trust whole heartedly the healing testimonies ( where someone with the ' gift of healing heals) i would be easily convinced. How many would be convinced by an 'angel ' visiataition ? Paul warns in Galations that even if an angel comes and preaches another Gospel not to believe it . So Just like in aviation when your taught to focus on the instruments during a plane out of control , not to trust your own perception of which way up the sky is from the ground . The bible likewise is the only true anchor . The only true ' north '. Will God kick us out if we get things wrong in pursuit of him ? through 'tongues ' and various other teachings that may or may not be true? No of Course not . But if somethings not true then its false obviously and to some there can be harm caused.

It sounds to me like you really need to ask yourself why you are in this particular thread. Are you here because you are missing something regarding tongues (or any of the other gifts that come with the Holy Ghost)... because that's what this thread is about... showing the functions of the Holy Ghost , and SPECIFICALLY the biblical benefits of speaking in tongues... or are you here to fight against tongues (as some come to do)?

you asked //.WHY was it given? WHAT does the bible say it accomplishes (while it is in operation)?/// I answered this question in detail . It was given as a Sign to Jews ( unbelieving Jews) . It accomplishes this. While its in operation, this is its goal ,so to speak . Jews Always require a sign . Thats what those verses at the end of Mark say these ' signs ' will be and for . In Acts we see them fulfilled . After this can God use them again ( so to speak) Yes of course . I believe they could be in operation again later for the jews . Currently we have no reason to believe they are in operation today , but im not dogmatic about it . Scriptural wise I have no reason to believe tongues were anything more than a ' sign ' accompanying the message to the Jews .

Its not a ' fight against ' . My thoughts on it are on what does the bible say . Could all the ' experiences ' be wrong that we see in church? Yes of course . New age and hinduism has similar experiences with their spiritual practices .
