By believing Jesus took the punishment for our sins by dying on the cross and also believing that he was buried and that he rose from the dead on the third day?

Hello and thank you for your question. What you have stated is a good beginning, but believing these things alone will not result in saving faith. James 2:19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. Mere intellectual believe will not save you. Of course, I believe that you are implying more than just intellectual belief, but rather a more heartfelt belief. Faith and belief in something is useless unless we act on that belief. Jesus said in Luke 13: 5 "I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish." First of all, before the Holy Spirit acts on our hearts, we are dead in our sins and unable to do good. When we begin to have faith, through the power of God's Word, (Scriptures), Holy Spirit acts on our hearts to change us and make it possible for us to act on our faith and accept His wonderful gift of salvation. At this moment, we are changed from being dead in our sins to being alive in Christ. We are then made aware of our past separation and enmity with God, and given the power to repent and to live new lives in Christ. We are then sanctified by living a life in obedience to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. At first this is not easy, but as we mature in our Christian faith, we become ever more like our Savior. This maturity is achieved through prayer, reading Scriptures, and fellowship with other Christians. As we mature, we come to love Jesus, and it is through this love for Him and His Church (other Christians), that we grow in faith. Jesus said in John 14: 15 "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. A true Christian will be known by His obedience to God's will, a truly changed life, and a love for others and for God. God bless!

Many don't want to believe that Jesus was unjustly punished by mankind. Many want to pervert the true gospel.

You are not saved by choosing to believe this. If God saved you by grace, you will believe the gospel as proof he saved you.

It's not enough to believe "mental assent" that Jesus took the punishment for our sins by dying on the cross, was buried and rose from the dead on the third day. We must also believe in our heart, by trusting in the death, burial and resurrection as the ALL-sufficient means of our salvation. (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Romans 1:16)

In Romans 10:8-10, we read - But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Don't let anyone confuse you by adding to the finished work of Jesus.
Amen! Christ's finished work of redemption is sufficient and complete to save believers. No supplements needed. (Romans 3:24-28)

1 Corinthians 1:18 - For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.......
21 - For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

In context you need to know why Jesus died, was buried and resurrected on the third day. Jesus died in your place. It was you that deserved to die for it was you that sinned. Only Jesus was righteous so only Jesus could be the Redeemer. Jesus resurrected to prove eternal life is His.

Before you can become saved you must believe you are lost. You must believe that you cannot save yourself. You must believe that only Jesus can and will save you from your sins.

For the cause of Christ

Right. Its not that Jesus was justly punished by his Father for our sins. He was unjustly punished by mankind for our sins. Big difference.

My head might be a mess so please bear with me (currently on some medication and my brain might just be messed up I guess). Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins, right? Jesus didn't take the punishment that the Father has for us through what happened to him on the cross?

No. The punishment for our sins is our own death, unless we desire God for forgiveness,

I forgave you all that debt because you begged me Mt.18:32

Jesus didn't take the punishment that the Father has for us through what happened to him on the cross?
Right, he didn't. Jesus taught that God forgives the repentant. He was killed for preaching repentance. The prophets, apostles and other believers who suffer injustice for the word of God are like him.

Not even the scripture?

Add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love.

For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wherefore...give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if you do these things, you shall never fall (2 Peter 5-10).

Think of sin as a noun, rather than a verb. Jesus died so that the sinful nature we inherited from Adam can be exchanged for Jesus's righteousness.

Romans 5:12-19 will be a good guide.
