Better late than never and this may help bring closure to this chapter of your life. Truthfully, the marriage, for all practical and spiritual purposes probably ended 31 years ago. I think that my older brother was separated for at least 10 years before his X finally filed for divorce.
My divorce in my first marriage was filed in March 1984 and finalized July 1984. My X was the one that blindsided me by filing. I was somewhat devastated, distraught, and disillusioned. A year later I realized what a blessing it was to be out of that horrible marriage. Got married Jan 14, 1978 and divorced Jul 12, 1984. I remained single and celibate (after a brief period of dating) for the next 18 years until I remarried my late second wife in 2002 who died in Feb 2014.
My second wife was a wonderful caring person but she was in declining health when we married. I knew that going in and was still willing to support her and take care of her. Those were the hardest 11 years of my life but I have no regrets as God sent me to her so that she could have someone in her life that actually loved her and was totally committed as a husband.
