I believe we need to learn how to die.

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

What scripture tells us that our soul has to die for us to be saved?

Yes because it is no longer governing the flesh.

Yes so Grace covers sinful thoughts not sinful flesh.

I think the issue here is a difference in understanding of the soul. It has been debated as to what the soul is and even where it resides, some say the soul is in our minds and dictates our thoughts and actions others say the soul is just our emotions and feelings others still say it's our nature which is why some say our soul must die because of the sinful nature and put on a holy nature.
I cannot say for sure but for me I have always felt that our soul is our true selves the real us and the very core of our being however I will say that once we have marked as his our old selves die and we rise anew but dying to ourselves is not a one time thing it's a constant daily thing as we must always humble ourselves and strive to reform our hearts to be more like his.

Even though our old selves died it still puts up a fight, the fact is as long as we live in these bodies sin will always be something we fight.

well technically the three in one for God is mind body and spirit. we are mind body and soul

A believer becomes born again when they receive Christ as Lord and Savior. Dying to self is apart of the process of being made holy, which is sanctification. Just like the rest of the sinful nature, dying to self is not something that magically takes place when we say yes to Christ. Because of our faith in Jesus as the One who provided salvation for us, we have been credited with righteousness and reconciled to God. Even though we still have our sinful natures God sees us with the righteousness of Christ. When the resurrection takes place and the living are changed into our immortal and glorified bodies, then our transition will be complete. In the mean time, as we continue from faith to faith, we are in the process of being transformed into the image of the Lord, which is a life-long process.
