When you can show me with scripture that speaking in tongues was gibberish jibber jabber, then we can talk.

I attended one such "church" for a time in my life, and one day (based on the "coaching" I was given by cult members to receive this "gift") I started babbling. The cult/deceived folk in attendance were all celebrating and saying I was "speaking in tongues". I clearly explained I was not, and simply babbling as per the instruction I had been given - "to loosen my tongue and say whatever came to my lips". This was something I always had been able to do, but hadn't done so in the church prayer meetings because I felt it was dishonest to misrepresent it as "speaking in tongues". But they wouldn't accept my explanation that it was simply babbling, irrespective that no one even interpreted what I said (although ideally at least 2 different interpreters would have been used to verify, to ensure that the interpreters are indeed interpreting and doing so precisely and consistently).

Although not an expert, I have not seen or been made aware of one example where churches that encourage "speaking in tongues" adequately test that those who claim to speak in tongues actually do so.

Paul explained that those who speak in an unknown tongue are speaking to God not speaking to men. He specifically stated that no man understands him. (1 Cor. 14:2) What Paul is referring to is personal prayer, not speaking a message in tongues in church.

Consider as well that the Apostle Paul was not spreading the gospel when he prayed and sang in unknown tongues. (1 Cor. 14:14-15)

So very often when the gift of the Divine Prayer language is mentioned people go off on a tangent confusing it with the public gifting, thank you for being one of the few with clarity!:)(y)
 
From what you have described, the people at your church are more qualified to explain tongues than anyone here. Maybe they are a little overbearing though they mean well.

The things of the spirit cannot be discerned/understood by human understanding.

The spirit things of God cannot be rationalized by our Earthly mind. This is why unbelievers cannot understand many biblical principals such as tithes and offering. They are spiritually recognized by having the spirit of God inside us.

1 Corinthians 2

13 We also speak these things, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

14 But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

According to Paul no man understands what is being said between God and the one speaking in tongues. (1 Cor. 14:2) So what makes you so sure that what you are hearing is nothing more than jibberish jibber jabber? You may want to pray about it.

And it was Jesus who said, the Father will give the Holy Ghost to those who ask. And scripture reveals the people knew exactly when they had received the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:4, 33; 8:12-18, 10:43-48, 19:1-7)
 
Early church history indicates after salvation the next step is the renewing of the mind to see the creation through the lens of the Father.

Actually the bible reveals that individuals knew whether they did or did not receive the Holy Ghost. It was speaking in tongues that confirmed the initial experience. (Acts 2:4, 33; 8:12-18, 10:43-48, 11:15-18, 19:1-7) The good works, deeds, etc. that you mention are signs that attest to the Holy Spirit's continuous presence after the initial infilling.

Note: Peter knew the Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit because he and others heard them speak in tongues. Since the Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit, Peter knew he was not to withhold water baptism from them.

Acts 11:15-18
"And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. (Acts 10:45-46)
Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life."

Paul did nor only say that. It's important to quote the full text

14 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

Those who speak in tongues speak to GOD Paul said Unless there is an interpretation.

Paul also goes on to say : 13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.


The gift of tongues according to 1corthians chapter 12 though 14 is"

  1. a gift of the Holy Spirit
  2. those who speak in tongues speak to GOD
  3. prophesying is more effective in ministry than tongues unless there is an interpretation
  4. those who speak in tongues should pray they can interpret which is equal to prophesying

That’s the point. Tongues in the first century were not jibberish jibber jabber. They were a known language.
 
I actually have not visited the church much after what I expereinced I am trying to find a different church to go to. But yeah the whole tongues thing was false fake non coherent I wouldn't recommend anyone to go to a church like that it is just too fake

IF we seek His guidance and upon receiving it, walk it out.
I have known of people who found out what their language was, and in each case this knowledge served to edify the believer and expand the Gospel, the first was a woman who had lost her USAF pilot husband early in the Vietnam war, she spoke it to a tour guide in Israel who identified it as an ancient form of Hebrew that is no longer in common use. This event was similar to an event when I met a young nurse practitioner and Holy Spirit manifested, I explained Holy Spirit manifests often when I encounter medical people, he proclaimed "Holy Spirit?!?, I'm a Jew!", so I got to share with him as well, edifying both we and the Gospel.
He will anyone at anytime to expand His Kingdom.
