Yes, what was he warning them to avoid doing.
 
Matthew 9:27-31

When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us!”

And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.”

Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” And their eyes were opened.

And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See no one knows .” But when they had departed, they spread the news about Him in all that country.

Yes, my understanding of that word is that it does not refer to word of mouth but rather more to publishing, some translate it that they "blazed it abroad" and so the warning was they would become unequally yoked with unbelievers in pushing that message out, publishing their books, etc. So yes, "do not go into the way of the Gentiles". Do not use the way of the world in your ministry.

If you are looking for an educated guess I would say fig, or at least that tree was right next to a fig tree where they got the leaves to cover their nakedness.

When Jesus refers to the Fig tree generation I think it is a reference to a nation built on the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We frequently see that as a reference to Israel, but their national symbol is not a fig tree, it is an olive tree. I think it still applies because we are told specifically that when the Jews do return to the land that they will not be saved, they will be sinful.

However, I think the more fitting reference to the Fig tree would be the UN being formed in 1945. "This generation" refers to a time frame that begins when this Fig tree puts forth leaves, that is their works. One of the very first works of the UN is to give Israel to the Jews as a nation. So that is why the prophecy does work very well with 1948, Israel is not the Fig tree, they are one of the first leaves put forth from this fig tree.

Matthew 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

Yes, 40 most often means test or trial.

There are a lot of “40” in Exodus…

Moses was 40 yrs old when he fled from Egypt to the wilderness, only to return 40 years later at the age of 80 to tell Pharoh God said, “Let My people go!”

Then, due to unbelief, Israel has to stay in the wilderness for 40 years.

Perhaps 40 means more that the test is “over/finished.” :unsure:
