Let’s talk about “works” as they are talked about in the Bible.
Ephesians 2:8-9 “ For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Because of this verse, works have become a bad word in religious discussions. Most religious people believe ALL works are bad. Works are lumped into one category “bad.”
But in just the NEXT VERSE, Paul says we should walk in “GOOD WORKS.” So obviously there are SOME works that are NOT BAD.
We have works being described as “BOASTFUL” ” in Eph. 2:9 which are bad and we have “GOOD WORKS” that we are suppose to walk in. And in JOHN 6:29, we have WORKS OF GOD. One of these works is “Faith.” Verse 29. Obviously, works of God are good.
Another passage talks about “WORKS OF THE LAW” Galatians 2:16 and those are “bad” works, too, that won’t save us. And Titus 3:5 talks about “WORKS of RIGHTEOUSNESS which “WE” do, which would also fall into the “bad” category. That’s “FIVE” (5) different kinds of works. The point is, when someone says we are NOT SAVED BY WORKS, they really need to define which kind of works they mean. God does not lump ALL works into the “bad” category.
What they USUALLY mean is that we are not saved by ANY works. Surely that can’t be true because “faith” is a work and everyone believes that faith saves us. Baptism is a work of God, Colossians 2:12 and Peter says IT saves us. 1 Peter 3:21 (regardless of those who refuse to believe it). That’s what the BIBLE says.. AND the point of James 2 :14-26 is that MAN is justified by works as well as faith but NOT BY FAITH ALONE. (Verses 21, 22, 24)
So, are there SOME works that save us and SOME works which do NOT save us? YES! We have to agree that the works of God save us because Jesus defined faith as a work of God. John 6:29. We know “without faith it is impossible to please Him.” Hebrews 11:6. So, I know without a doubt that we are saved by WORKS OF GOD.
Obviously, we need to define what the WORKS OF GOD are. When the people asked Jesus the question about what are the works ( plural) of God, He did not correct their question as if it was in error. Would it surprise you to know that these people who asked the question were NOT BELIEVERS. In verse 30 they want to see a “sign”. So that THEY MIGHT BELIEVE HIM. So they don’t believe in Him when they asked him the question. In verse 36, He testifies about them, that they DO NOT BELIEVE. So how does Jesus. who can read minds and hearts, answer their question? What do they need to do? THEY NEED TO BELIEVE! would it have been LOGICAL for Jesus to tell them to “repent”,? no, faith must come first. Would you expect Him to tell them to be baptized? Never! Baptism is for believers. And faith is the FIRST thing they must do. Without faith, baptism is nothing more than getting wet! So He tells them that if they really want to work the works of God, they must have FAITH. I wouldn’t have expected Him to give any other answer. Faith comes first! Faith is a PRE-REQUISITE for repentance, confession and baptism. And we know there are more works of God than just faith because Paul calls baptism the “working of God” in Col. 2:12
Whatever God tells man he must do to be saved would be a work of God—not a work of man. That means “repentance” and “confession” are necessary works of God, too.
Would you deny that the works of God are works of righteousness? Surely, all of God’s works are righteous. What then are the WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS talked about in Titus 3:5 that are bad? The Key to those works is the pronoun “WE” They are SELF- righteous works which “WE” do. Perhaps these are the kinds of works that the People in Matthew 7 did. They said to the Lord, “and in thy name done many mighty works!” But He said He never knew them. They were working without His authority ( lawlessness).
There is another kind of “works of righteousness” that someone has called “practical” righteousness. If you want to call it something else that’s alright with me. That name is not in the Bible so I’m just using it to illustrate. But this is the example of Cornelius in Acts 10. Cornelius was NOT A CHRISTIAN but He is described by the Holy Spirit as “devout, one who feared God, gave alms GENEROUSLY to the people, and prayed to God always. He was living a good life through good deeds ( works). But he wasn’t saved. So these are al least 2 kinds of righteousness that will not save. You.
How do we “apply”. What we know about works? One way is to understand that not ALL works are condemned by Ephesians 2:8-9. The ONLY works that are condemned there are “BOASTFUL “ works. This verse is specifically used to try to eliminate “baptism.” However, Jesus Himself tells me that baptism is NOT one of these works because He said that when you have done what God ( your master) tells you to do, you CANNOT BOAST, because you have only done your “DUTY.” You have only done what God told you to do. Like 17, and you can’t boast about that. Can you “boast “ about believing? Is “.faith” a “boastful work”? Neither is repentance, confession nor baptism. Those are WORKS OF GOD that he has told us to do. It is our “duty”?to obey the Master. Luke 17:10.
So, the next time someone says “works won’t save you.” Ask them what kinds of works are they talking about. Are they talking about “boastful” works? Works of the old law,? works of God, ? self righteous works? It makes a difference.
