He says our faith is justified by our works. There is nothing in James to suggest works save us. If we have genuine faith in God and not just "hearsay" (because I say so
Jm.2:18), then we will have works commensurate with our faith. If our works don't line up with what we say we believe then our faith is dead (ie.no production of value).
Faith comes from the word (
Rom.10:17) and the word of God is alive and active (
Heb.4:12) hence genuine faith results in works.
I agree with some of what you say. However,
1) it takes BOTH faith and works to save us which seems to be the reason James uses so many examples of “works.” He used The demons as a negative example—having faith but NO works; he used Abraham and Rahab, as positive examples of how faith and works work together to “JUSTIFY” us.Google says “To “justify” means for Christ to declare a person righteous and acceptable; an act of grace by which He forgives the sins of a believer. “.
The thing that is causing a problem is that you mistakenly think that “works justify our FAITH”. ( this is what you said) but verse 24 says “A MAN IS JUSTIFIED BY WORKS.” It’s not “FAITH IS JUSTIFIED BY WORKS.” ITS “MAN, who is justified by works. That literally says that MAN, is “declared righteous and forgiven of sins” ( Google) by his WORKS. That harmonizes perfectly with verse 22. That “Faith” and “works” work together. And this is the reason I believe in faith plus works equals salvation. ( I can hear the screams now!)
Look carefully at the text in James 2.
it was ABRAHAM that was justified by works—not faith. Abraham was declared righteous and forgiven of his sins BY HIS WORKS.—not faith. By this I mean it is not “faith” that is justified—it’s Abraham, the man who is JUSTIFIED.
It was RAHAB who was declared righteous and forgiven of sins by her WORKS—not her faith.
Verse 24- A. MAN is “declared righteous and forgiven of sins” by his WORKS. It’s not his “faith” that is justified, but the MAN.is justified.
James 2 is literally saying that a MAN is “saved” ( forgiven of sins) by his WORKS.
It is NOT by works ONLY as Verse 22 plainly says it takes BOTH—faith AND works. They work together to save us.
Faith does not have sins; faith does not need to be “declared righteous.” Faith does not need “JUSTIFICATION.” MAN needs justification. And it is MAN who is “justified” by WORKS in James 2–not faith.
Now let’s look at “faith” in verse 22. The Spirit says that “faith” was made “perfect” by works. Google “PERFECT.” It means that “faith” is made “WHOLE, SOUND, HEALTHFUL, HAVING INTEGRITY, COMPLETE, and ENTIRE., by our works.
Honesty is highly valued by God and is necessary to our salvation; having an honest heart allows us to see and ACCEPT the “TRUTH” of God’s word so we can be saved. I honestly believe, with my whole heart, that HERE is what THE HOLY SPIRIT is saying in James 2:14-26.:
1) It takes BOTH “faith” and “works” to be “justified” in the sight if God. Verse 22.
—that means we are not saved by faith
alone, without works.
—that also means we are not saved by
Works alone without faith.
2) MAN is ”justified” , saved, by works—not
works only. Verses 21, 24, 26
3) MAN is “justified by faith—not faith
Only. Verse 24
4) faith is made “perfect” by works. Verse 22
It is made stronger, whole, sound,
Complete and entire” by our works.
The Holy Spirit talks about different subjects in different places in the Bible. EVERY SUBJECT IN THE BIBLE IS NOT DISCUSSED IN ONE PLACE.
IN This chapter the Spirit is talking about “works” and showing how necessary they are to our faith and to our justification before God. It is not primarily talking about how faith is necessary. That is discussed heavily in the book of John. Just because faith is not emphasized in this chapter, does not mean that faith is not important or necessary. It’s just not the subject here. “WORKS” is the primary subject in James 2:14-26. The Holy Spirit is showing us that works are important and necessary, too, along with faith; not only do they make our faith better, they are necessary for man’s justification.
This is exactly what Jesus says in Mark 16:16- “He ( Man) that believes ( faith) and is baptized ( work) shall be saved. Yes, faith is a work of God, John 6:29 and so is baptism a work of God, Col. 2:12. James said it takes BOTH! Jesus said the same thing. It takes BOTH.
God gives us a warning in Revelation 22:19:
“if anyone TAKES AWAY from the words of THE BOOK, God will take away his name from the Book of Life.”
we can ALL be united if we just believe what the Bible says.
