The souls of biggest mistake are those who have ultimately failed at exempting themselves from believing/embracing correct doctrine.
If they were not born of the Spirit to be given the everlasting gift of life, then they were not saved. So, then I would agree that they rejected Jesus to remain in condemnation. John 3:18 Once physical death occurs there is no hope.

feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one's wrongdoing or sin.
If I remember correctly, that was one of James Strong's definitions. I'm not going to geek out and get into a Greek language study here. I don't even know enough Greek to get around in Cypress. I have studied the Bible words translated repent/ repentance however. It was important to me to learn what the Word of God means when using the term.
Why?
A. It's important to God to make clear what His requirements are for salvation. He certainly did and Repent/ repentance is defined in the English Bible, so there is no need to learn a foreign language.
B. It's important to the Son of God, Jesus Who went through unimaginable suffering and experienced death for all mankind throughout history.
C. It's important to those who do not want to experience the everlasting torments of Hell.
D. It's important to me, because I don't want to misinterpret or misrepresent THE most important topic for every human being, whether they know that now or not.
SInce I heard so many conflicting definitions from evangelical, protestant and Baptist pulpits, poopes and celebrities, even Greek/Hebrew dictionaries: I took the effort to beg God and diligently search the Scriptures for answers with a humble open mind.
God blessed me with a few utterly important answers.
Agreed. They can argue for a heresy and claim to believe it, knowing it is false, for some perverse reason. And if they persist they can start to believe their own lie to the point eventually where they become sure they are believing truth. But by that point they no longer know it is a lie.
Yes He does. God IS love, and would love for those sinners in hell to seek reconciliation with Him. Love always hopes and never gives up, 1 Cor. 11.
Yes, one example is Easter Sunday service at a Nursing/ assisted living home. The retired Catholic priest said he prayed the prayer I led for salvation, but when I questioned him after the service to see if he understood, I found that he still held to his works based dogma. I showed him a clear Bible verse and he read it back to me in a totally distorted rewritten view to contradict salvation by God's grace through faith in His Son.
We parted on pleasant terms even though we disagreed in the chance I might be able to get through to him another time. Those are hard to reach, but others were saved that day.
