Eh. You don't even have to install drivers for windows to use all your hardware. Just put it on, run the stupid exe and wipe it out.

I won't tell linux you have been cheating on it if you don't.
It's sort of funny in a shaking my head sort of way Lynx, they know how to produce easy bios updates for Linux, like they did for the b550 v2. So why the hell don't they?

They aren't cheapie mobos either, it's video encoding, not gaming i need them for, Spyro the Dragon and his friends don't need that sort of power. I don't actually trust any OS but Windows is, um.... very intrusive, will sort the updates and hope a good disinfection will be enough after.

Cheers for saying you won't tell on me to Linux, can you promise not to?

I just did. You have the word of Lynx. What more do you need?

I'm not even going to bother promising to not tell Unix and BSD. Nobody cares what they know about. They can't do anything.

They can't even tell Linux. Their wifi drivers haven't worked for weeks.

Wiping tears of laughter from my eyes, you really made me crack up laughing with the Unix/BSD reference. And then the wifi drivers......

Amazing how restorative near killing yourself laughing can be, needed that for sure, it's been a trying few days. Cheers :giggle:

I've got a laptop that came with win10 but was upgraded to win11(its a gaming pc I use to play online). I tried to update bios because I wanted to upgrade my ram, but the only options were for win10. I tried to upgrade anyway and it failed for some reason. I guess windows 11 wouldn't allow it to upgrade or something. At any rate, I said forget it and bought the ram and installed it the way it was and it worked. I only tried to update bios because the manufacturer recommended it when upgrading ram or the ram may not work but it wasn't an issue in the end. Anyway, bios is weird.

Think it's because i'm an old dear who's been into computing for near half a century, i 'm more techie than the vast majority of you youngsters. :p When i were a lass you'd soon wind up in tech hell, or even worse, need tech help which cost an arm and a leg minimum, if you didn't get somewhat clued up on what was inside your machine. Ah! Those were the days, the Spectrum 48k and Commodore 64 when computing went mass market. Can't remember the name of the mid-'80s game console i had but Donkey Kong, Chess and The Smurfs were my favourite games, even let my children play them sometimes. Well, they weren't into chess, still aren't sadly but hey!

The above stuff is probably why i don't buy off the shelf/generic machines too, nor do i think there's a consumer laptop which could cope with the amount of video encoding i do. Doing such with a laptop would probably be a fire hazard, it's worse than intense gaming even for rigs. Oh glory Lynx and Zandar, bios isn't weird if you learn enough to be confident with it. It's actually the heart of your machine, customising it/setting defaults yourself etc is really important, bit of a hassle at first but soon becomes second nature. Last year there was a problem where the bios of some newer AMD rigs were compromised. As i said previously, the big difference twixt them and Intel is AMD are more likely to hold their hands up when such things happen, which is why they get my shilling.

Really appreciate the advice and giggle from you, helped me get a better perspective back, was feeling irritated and frustrated. Hope you have a gr8 weekend, Blessings and all that's good for now

Its just funny how your os can mess up your bios when bios should be completely independent.

Too right zandar, it's less likely with a Linux OS, they're more customisable than Windows which is such a control freak, it knows if you've dropped toast crumbs on your machine. If i remember right, it used to update your bios along with software and stuff, i customise mine myself and would know if it was messed with.

Seriously recommend reading up on and taking a look at your bios, i really don't think it's a good idea to let others have control of it.

Glad i read that again, might have some ideas Zandar, what company produced your bios? EDIT: Ooh, I'd ditch Win 11 if i were you, wouldn't touch it with a barge pole myself.

Don't worry about Linux, it's forgiving unlike, um the other.
I am OS agnostic. I will use whatever works. Windows for my game computer, Linux mint for my flash drive install that I can boot on any box, puppy Linux for forensics and data retrieval on crashed computers, BunsenLabs for very old computers that can't handle anything more demanding...

Definitely understandable, i actually don't trust any OS but Windows, especially 11, is literally spyware/malware. Which doesn't mean the others are loads better but somewhat is better than nothing.
The ones i use are pretty customisable and i keep an eye on their resource use. If it's more than is ok with me, they're toast.

Should have worked that out lad, nowt daft about you......
Well it has downsides. No steam anything, ever. You have to be connected to use steam.

But the good games that are DRM locked are usually only thus for about 3 years. After they figure they have made all the money they can, they remove the DRM and other sites that don't require an internet connection can sell them.

Shoot, I only played Skyrim a couple years ago, after they finally released it DRM free and it landed on GOG.

I figure if there is ever a really good game that I have to play right now, but it is steam and epic only, I will clone my system to a different hard drive and use that to get online and play the game. After I'm done with the game I will swap hard drives back.

No longer so keen on Steam myself Lynx, would like more info on those sites. Might i be able to buy Spyro Reignited and The Turing Test, to play on Linux offline? Was into Hades for a while too but getting very squeamish in my old age.

I just checked and neither Spyro nor Turing is available on GOG.

I'm not familiar with any other platform. GOG has always been enough to fill up my free time that I don't have any other use for.

Really appreciated Lynx, would be grateful if you could your eyes open, it might turn up sometime. Not so bothered about Reignited, actually prefer the PS games, they're more rough but have more heart, think you'll know what i mean. There's this word game i used to love on Steam too, the characters wore mediaeval costume, if you know the game or see it, please let me know. Cheers!(y)
