Genesis 9:27 God shall enlarge Japheth [ Descendants are believed to be the Greeks], And he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; And Canaan shall be his servant.
The twenty-fifth day of the Jewish month of Tevet is a holiday on which fasting and mourning are forbidden. The 25th of Tevet was the day the Kutim requested permission from a Greek, Alexander the Great, Descendant of Japheth to destroy the second temple. “They informed Shimon HaTzadik; what did he do? He dressed himself in his priestly vestments and marched through the night towards Alexander with the nobility of the Jewish people bearing torches... As soon as Alexander perceived Shimon HaTzadik, he descended from his chariot and bowed to him. They asked him, 'a great ruler such as yourself bows to this Jew?' He told them, 'The image of this man precedes me in my victorious battles.' Alexander asked the Jews, 'Why have you come?' They answered, 'Is it possible that you wish to destroy the house in which they pray for your success?' (Talmud, Yuma 69a) On the 25th of Kislev the Maccabees liberated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after defeating the armies of the Syrian-Greek king Antiochus IV, who had tried to forcefully uproot the beliefs and practices of Judaism from the people of Israel.
I find it interesting that with the promise in Genesis that the descendants of Japheth would dwell in the house of Shem, The Greeks came against the house of Shem. During the time of Alexander the Great, the Greeks did not destroy the temple and recognized the GOD of Israel. During the time of The Maccabees The Greeks tried to erase The beliefs and spiritual practices of the Jewish people.
